My Barrett "family"

Got all three of these puppies out of the vault yesterday. I lapped the scope rings on the models 95 and 99 and mounted the Nightforce scopes. Now that Shepherd scope on the model 82 looks like a pygmy.

Anyway, from back to front, these are

Now, I REALLY need to sight those scopes in on the models 95 and 99! Plus some play time on the M82 is in order as well!

How did that lapping job go? I'm curious, did you find any high spots or other imperfections in those rings?

The ring lapping wasn't all that tough to do, but I did discover something. The Barrett rings on the models 95 and 99 are adjustable for elevation. The first set I started to lap on the model 99 didn't seem to been lapping evenly, so I stood back and took a look at the situation. It appeared that the rings were not flush to the mount. I had to loosen the adjustment screws and then press the rings firmly down onto the mount to make sure they were square. Then the lapping process produced a very even wear pattern.

When I checked the rings on the model 95, the rear ring was set much higher than the front ring. I bought this gun used, so maybe the guy did some very long distance shooting with it. But I had to reset the height on those rings as well.

I haven't had a chance to sight the scopes in yet, but I am wondering about this entire process. The scopes slide so easily now in the rings when they are loosely set on the scope that I'm wondering if the scopes will move under heavy recoil. I know lapping is supposed to give more surface area for gripping power, but heck it seems to have made the surface area slicker. Maybe some roughness would be better? Guess I'll find out.

I'm hoping I can find time to shoot some of these bad boys myself. I have to site in the scopes on the two bolt actions. And I need to check out something with the magazines on the semi-auto. But darn it, time is just hard to come by lately. You would think being able to shoot on your own property that this wouldn't be a problem.....

Rich, if you feel that you lapped the holes too big, you can cure that by putting sandpaper on the flattest hardest surface you can find and rubbing the flat surfaces of the rings where the screws go through to create more space for tightening.

I sighted in the model 99 and there was no movement of the scope at all, so I think I did the lapping part OK. Been meaning to get around to sighting in the model 95, but been rather busy lately. Plus it is yellow fly season around here now, and its damned hard to concentrate when three yellow flies are biting on your forehead.

But I do like the Nightforce scopes, though. LOTS of space between the rim and my forehead so I don't have to worry about the scope knocking my eyebrow off during recoil.

My only 50 is a AR conversion from ALS, its great!

Man I wish I had more money to purchase one of each, and a state arms, and a AR50, and a McBros, a Serbu, a ultra Mag, etc...
