I have two Ruger 10/22s and the trigger on both of them leaves a lot to be desired. The stainless one is abominable! Gritty and very heavy. Of course, it is the newer of the two guns. The blued one I have had for at least 20 years. And you know, now that I think of it, I have NEVER had it jam or misfire.

Rather than tinkering around with the present stock trigger set, what would be the best replacement trigger group I could get for these two rifles?

I guess while I am at it, is replacing the barrel with a good aftermarket one worth doing? I can't complain about how they shoot now, but they definitely aren't top on the list of my rifles for tight groupings.

You don't need to replace the whole trigger group to improve it. I had my gunsmith friend replace just the hammer. That made all the difference in the world on the trigger pull.
Then I replaced the barrel with a Butler Creek .910 barrel with a match chamber. It fits perfectly with the BC synthetic stock made for the heavy barrel.
That gun will throw dime sized groups at 50 yrds. I can fit a 25 round clip in that one ragged hole with this setup. I even printed my name (readable!) at 50 yrds

Rich,

Get a Brownell's catalog. Volquartson, Power and Clark all make accessories to help your trigger. You can even buy replacement groups if you want.

Try this link:

All kinds of great stuff.

Rich:
It is easy to upgrade your trigger group with Volquartson, On Target or Power custom parts, very inexpensively.

You can even order a whole trigger group from Volquartson.

If you want to go whole hog, and spend more than the rifle cost in the first place, get a kidd trigger group. Four of my 10/22's have Kidd trigger groups. They are available on the Internet for about $269.00, or there about.

Power Custom -- http://www.powercustom.com/

Edited to add:

The gritty trigger on your new 10/22 is called a "Lawyer trigger." When you smooth up The triggers action, It releases the manufacture from all liability, as it now is a modified gun.

Here is something else you might want to look into. It's a good, picatinney rail sight for a Ruger 10/22.
