While watching news reports on the terrorist takeover of the Russian middle school, I noted the following small arms carried by Russian soldiers and police:

AK-47's (carried by police)
AK-74's
AN-94's (this is the new rifle that is so advanced)
SVD Dragunov's (including folding stock variants)

The SVD has proven its value for the Russians in previous fighting against terrorists. Soldiers fighting terrorists in Chechnya often came to favor the optical sights and greater accuracy of the SVD, despite its capacity and rate-of-fire limitations.

I wonder if they will bring any of the Spetsnaz troops or just use regular military. Also, it seems rather strange that they aren't using any specialized BA sniper rifles.

RIKA, the Russians appear to have deployed a police unit that deals with hard core criminals and Russian organized crime rings. The group that may be called upon to assault and retake the school is a group know as OMAN.

The Muslim terrorists have been observed with automatic small arms, explosives and RPG's. I believe that they have duplicated the Moscow Theater situation, but using a middle school. To me, nothing is more reprehensible than using children as a shield. The terrorists are banking that the Russians will not accept the 15 percent casualties that they took in the theater if it involves children.

Since the terrorists are openly shooting from the school and have turned down any negotiations, I fear this will end tragically.

The Russian troops may not have the money or high-tech gear that other nations enjoy, but they are tough, efficient and determined.

Well, all I can say is the Russians know how to not take sh!t from terrorists.
Of course the whole world doesn't scream whine, howl and piss their pants when the Russians kill people, unlike what they do when we decide to do so.

If they use Spetsnaz, you can be sure they won't advertise the fact, especially before they hit the school.

Druganov is a joke, man. Rimmed cartridge and all. 2MOA 2.5x scope,whoopee has the same effective range as 11" CAR. :-)

Dragunovs have 4x scopes.

The 7.62x54mmR is comparable to the 150 gn .30-06 M2 cartridge. It has an excellent effective range; certainly in excess of 500 yards.
