I just finished a book titled, "Great Raids in History" Edited by Samuel A. Southworth. In it he describes the WWII raid on Dieppe. One of his theories is that3,394 Canadians were sacrificed on an ill planned raid by Winston Churchill to prove to the Americans an invasion of Europe was not possible in 1942. Any comment on this?

I had an uncle (god rest his soul) at Dieppe in the Toronto Scottish (if I remember correctly). He had an 8mm hole in his ear lobe, by the time he evacuated the beach.

History has shown, that when Canadian soldiers serve under a British Generals, large numbers of Canadian soldiers die! Generally needlessly. Dieppe was no doubt a politically motivated raid, but the intelligence gleemed from those Canadians dying paved the way for the success of 06 June 1944. The lessons learned that day became the tactical and equipment successes of D-Day.

I also noticed that the English historically used Canadians to get dirty jobs done that they couldn't do themselves.

Unfortunately, they have done the same to the Australians also.

I know of seveal incidences in WW1 AND WW2 where the Brits used the Aussis and Canadians in real bloched operations (Galipoli and Dieppe are just two of many.) I have no idea why except the Brits higher ups seem to stick their not-so-bright leaders in charge of these units.

I don't think Churchill would see so many killed just to prove a point to the Americans. Notice we could not even bomb them well until we had fighter escort in very late 43 and we sure didn't have air supperority over the mainland in 42!

Dunkirk was the port that the retreat from Europe of the French, & British Armies evacuated through. Unfortunately the was at least 1 Battalion of Canadian Infantry there. Only a British Commander would order Canadians to retreat. In Korea, rather than retreating, the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian light Infantry called in artillery on themselves when being over run. Canadian only retreat when ordered by the British! The wankers!

It DOES seem that the British are more than happy to use other countries troops when the operation is "iffy".
