in the face sometime. :-) Even if the fingertips "only" strike your cheeks and forehead, your eyes will CLAMP shut, and you WON'T be able to open them, and when you CAN, the tears will be so bad that you STILL won't be able to see. :-) I've been doing single finger pushups for 32 years now.

The guy who got gouged won the match. Try again, tough guy.

finger whips are great, especially because they extend your range but if someone is jabbing your jab or in this case the whip, could get broken finger. people that tend to flick fingers also hold their guards lower from what I've seen, hands around chest vs by jaw.

Doesn't sound like you are describing what I would consider a gouge. More like tiger or eagle claws raking across the eyes.

Most bona fide eye strikes that we were taught were either a single finger or a double finger strike.

With the finger or fingers supported by the remaining fingers in a "panther fist" configuration.

The fingers used for the strike are either the index finger by itself, or the index and middle finger together.

Again, this is just the way we were taught.

Whips, claw strikes, we did them from the same postures we used for punches, etc. There was not a lower positioning of hands or anything like that.

One thing I keep noticing, is Andy talks about a strike or technique, but can never quite describe it.

Or when he does describe it, it doesn't jibe with the general understanding of everyone else.

He also tends to have a different application for things too.

May mean something, may not.

Again, I haven't had the formal training really, just going off of what I observed. Karate didn't help at all (I was 8 years old). Aikido I took focused on locks and projections, not "atemi-waza" or striking stuff. BJJ didn't teach anything outside of groundwork... at higher levels you get into the judoesque throws but I wasn't with it that long. Boxing, just fists. I pieced together fundamentals from Muay Thai from books, vid and a guy I rolled with from NM. Other than that... "eagle claw" "three finger gouge" are things I never had the chance to learn.

My idea of an eye gouge is something applied in a grappling situation when you want to pop and orb out or just deflate it by stirring around. It's just a natural defense mechanism to have the eyes NOT ****ed with so that's why I'd think they'd try to give their back if a serious gouge is being attempted. (or go to bite your hand)

Because striking was discussed, I automatically thought "whip." More of a distraction to set up a serious strike or slam rather than a true attempt at disabling someone.

It's good, I'm learning.

Ninja?

no thanks.

Do martial arts make you invincible? Hell no. They're just another tool in the tool box.

The skills are good to have, but I've seen street fighters way more skilled than many black belts (or equivalents in the sash systems).

Of all the moves and techniques I've learned, there's probably a handful that I consider to be essential. The rest are important for historical and discipline reasons.

But, everyone's a critic.

My King Fu, like my spirit is strong. (picture sound and lips moving out of synch) You will suffer to my techniques, taught to me by Master Wimp Lo and Master Tu Fat.

Boot to the head. Thump.
