Suppose that I stand at the North Pole and shoot at a polar bear with a smoothbore musket.

Easy question: Which way, left or right, will the bullet (musketball) drift?

Tough question: Why?

brass hammer is right! The assumption being that if I'm shooting at the North Pole, any shot would go south. I chose a smoothbore to remove spin induced drift. If you were to look down at the Earth from above the North Pole, the Earth would appear to turn counterclockwise. From the shooter's perspective the bullet would drift right.

This is known as Coriolis effect.
