Anyone put a new barrel (or rechambered) a M48 Mauser? ...or are fgamiliar with the process. If so, how difficult is it? Is it worth being a tinkering project or not?

Where would be the best place to purchase new barrels for these? I know they are a made a little differently!

Thanks,
KJ

Brownells offers M98 barrels; Midway does too. For how to do it, check out Kuhnhausen's book on gunsmithing the 98 Mausers. I've watched while a rifle was rebarreled. Its not hard to do but requires some tool investment.

Thanks. I checked out Midway before making this post and looked at the 98 barrels. I found some I liked, but the techs didn't say it would work on the 48s. I was under the perception (possibly mistaken) that the threads were different (shorter of just a different twist or something) on the M48 than the 98s. I'm I mistaken?

Are the barrels for the K98s completely interchangeable (with the right equipment and headspacing adjustments) with the Yugo M48s?

Thanks,
KJ

You're welcome. I'm not a Mauser expert but if I were doing a project I would e-mail Brownell's tech department. Their people know the product and what they are doing. Should be able to answer all your questions along with any followups. Answers take 2-3 days to process. Actually I think that if screw threads are compatible the rest should work. A short headspaced chamber can be sized/lengthened perfectly without a lathe and with the hand tools they sell.

I never even thought of that. I've called them once or twice, but always got lackluster support. Of course, I was talking to customer service and not tech support. Ironically, I was never even told that they had a tech support!

Anyway, on your advice, I emailed them after looking over their selection. Just in case anyone is interested, I'll post a reply when I finally get it to this thread.

I don't know why, but I love those old rifles, they way they feel, etc., but I don't reallt want to have beaucoup all in the same cailber. I want some other flavors for hunting. :) Good way to get a better shooter, too, in some cases.

I just wish I could change the barrels on my Mosin's, too. I really like them. I've heard vague rumors that you can make one into a .45-70Gov, but I don't know for sure that you can with reasonable effort. It would be a fun toy IMO.

I REALLY wish I could take a Mosin and neck the cartridge up to .338 caliber, but I think that is as much a pipe dream as anything. :)

Actually, I think it is the Turkish that has the odd threads and not the Yugos. Not sure, but I woke up realizing my mistake (or what I think my mistake is). I must have "slept" on it or something.

Anyone know if the Turkish are the ones with the threads that don't match up with a standard K98 receiver?

Yes, IF they are Turkish made rifles. They have the Small Ring Mauser threaded hole. Many people made "Twedes" out of them using Swede Mauser '96 barrels and Turkish made actions. Back when you could get new or like new Swede '96 barrels for cheap.

However there are a few that were made under contract in Germany that are lagre ring ones. These are not that common though.

Thanks, Mabu.

Brownells' replied with this information: "Your Yugo actions, as far as barrel fitting is concerned, are standard large ring '98 Mauser, and any barrel intended for the '98 will work."
