Phila. Police Buy Back Unwanted Guns from Public
by KYW's Mike DeNardo
Got a gun? Philadelphia police -- mindful of the recent rash of homicides -- are offering vouchers worth up to $200 under a gun-exchange program next month.
The gun buyback program offers vouchers at "City Blue" clothing stores, for anyone who goes to any Philadelphia police station and turns in an unloaded gun.
Local philanthropist Joe Mammana is helping to pay for the gun buyback. He says he's tired of hearing about people being shot:
"I don't want it to be one of my children, and I don't want it to be one of yours. Somebody's got to step to the plate."
The vouchers are offered on a sliding scale: assault rifles are worth $200, handguns $100, and rifles $50.
"I believe in getting these guns off the street any way you possibly can. And right now, hopefully, the reward money will be the motivating factor."
The program runs from April 1st through the 30th.
