Phila. Police Buy Back Unwanted Guns from Public

by KYW's Mike DeNardo

Got a gun? Philadelphia police -- mindful of the recent rash of homicides -- are offering vouchers worth up to $200 under a gun-exchange program next month.

The gun buyback program offers vouchers at "City Blue" clothing stores, for anyone who goes to any Philadelphia police station and turns in an unloaded gun.

Local philanthropist Joe Mammana is helping to pay for the gun buyback. He says he's tired of hearing about people being shot:

"I don't want it to be one of my children, and I don't want it to be one of yours. Somebody's got to step to the plate."

The vouchers are offered on a sliding scale: assault rifles are worth $200, handguns $100, and rifles $50.

"I believe in getting these guns off the street any way you possibly can. And right now, hopefully, the reward money will be the motivating factor."

The program runs from April 1st through the 30th.

I always thought that that'd be a quick way to buy something kool.

Imagine standing outside the PD & waving a little cash.

He he.

Actually, we buy old derelict guns at about $20-$50 dollars and hand them in at these events. Hand in 5-6 handguns and you get $500 or more dollars to spend on a good AR-15 or something.

We also refuse to turn guns in for IOU's, vouchers, etc. Should have seen the look on the cops face in DC when we walked out with a gym bag of guns and laughed at him when he told us we couldn't leave with them.

LOL, and I was thinking it's time to pick up a sh*t load of $30 Jennings, Lorcins, HP-22s, etc. . .$100 a pop. . . but not for a voucher to the gangbanger fashion outlet. . .

Yup. And pretty amazing that a hunk of iron could predict the future...... Pretty symbolic, I would say.

What do they do with said guns once they have them? Destroy them?

Those that participate in the program are probably better off for not having the guns around...

These 'turn-ins' are usually no questions asked right?

It appears to me to be an incentive to steal guns and turn them in legally. I just wonder what this does for the theft rate of guns.

Yeah,a good way to do an evidence dump on the fly...."no questions asked" and nothing to tie you to the last use.

We had one a while back - maybe 10 years or so. I rounded up all the junkers that didn't work right or were just plain worn out (examples - JC Higgens 12ga double with cracked reciever, Marlin Mod 60 with warped reciever) and brought them to the PD. I was informed that they needed to be WORKING guns (one didn't have a bolt) or they wouldn't pay for them. Should have seen the look when I packed them back up and started to walk off. Was questioned why I was turning them in if I was legal to own them - I said if you're gonna give me $100 for one of these, I'll take it, but if you're not paying me, I'll hold on to 'em.
I was told that that wasn't the point of the program, I said "I know" and left.
