From The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran...
"And a woman spoke, saying, Tell us of Pain.
And he said:
Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.
And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.
And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.
Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility:
For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,
And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears."
I kind of like the Drill Sergeant quote "Pain is just weakness leaving your body". I lie to myself by telling me that.

My little girl likes when I read passages of this book to her.
One of my favorite books and authors. :)
Pain is for telling you when you are screwing up. Once you get the message, the rest is pointless.

That’s terrible Andy, I feel sorry for you.
With your definition, I would imagine that you are in excruciating pain every day of your life!

You really missed a lot of your black belt training, didn't you? Sounds like you maybe got trained on some of the mechanics, but that's all.
Too bad.
It's the little things that paint the biggest pictures.
I really do wish you success with your web site endeavors - you appear to be in need of it.

I think there are different types of pain:
The body can ache:
- injury / illness
- fatigue / working out / building
The mind can ache:
- ignorance
- thirst for knowledge
The soul can ache:
- loss of love
- lack of spirituality (not the same as lack or religion)
- lack or religion
Just some thoughts....

I kind of like Richard Marcinko's view on pain: "It lets me know I'm alive."
My outlook: If you have no pain, it's because you're not doing anything.

That seems to be a fairly accurate list of conclusions Aslan.

You beat me to it, I was going to say the same two things.
When you have a bad accident, or take a blow to the head or something, pain should be a kind of assurance. It means that you are alive and concious.
Think about it, almost everything you do that is worth doing will at some point make you sore, slip and cut you, give you a few slams or just wear you down; Shooting big guns, handywork like carving (I am accident prone), shooting big guns, working out, playing sports, hiking, reading Melvins posts (hilarious but painful), and shooting smaller but still substantial guns. If its fun it will probably hurt at some point.

Pain may be necessary and natural, but it still sucks.
Pain is the price for knowing what pleasure is (no, I'm not some S&M weirdo).
If you don't experience pain, how will you know something feels good?
The end result of something that you want done means you will have to pay in some way: I want a nice looking yard so:
a) pay someone to do it - my wallet feels the pain
b) do it myself - my body feels the pain
c) ignore it - my soul feels pain for not having something that gives my joy
If you don't do anything that will cost you - you're a sad, small little person.
not at all, punk. I screw up on any serious level so seldom that if it was excrucitating, it would only be a minor blip on my life. It's you poor bastard's sort of meaningless drivel of a life that would be painful, if you knew enough to realize it.

I don't know, man. When I think of pain now, I remember hearing my friend's wife on Christmas when we visited them moaning from the bedroom in pain from cancer. Pain can drive your sanity away. Seeing someone else in pain can break your heart. Yourself having chronic pain from which there is no cure can break your will to live.
Pain can drive you from life itself.
The fact that you UNDERSTAND what REAL pain is shows, Rich. The little worm level of "understanding" shows, too.

Why is it that you are so full of pain and hatred? It's clear you are, as you cannot hold a simple discussion without insults and anger.
You'd be surprised at what pain people here have either experienced first hand or witnessed first hand.
You post stuff like this and then wonder why people react to you the way they do.

Just when I thought it couldnt get any lower........
This is my worst nightmare, seeing someone I love in that kind of pain. I'd rather be dead myself.
