St. Petersburg 5-year-old cuffed after school outburst

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A 5-year-old girl was arrested, cuffed and put in back of a police cruiser after an outburst at school where she threw books and boxes, kicked a teacher in the shins, smashed a candy dish, hit an assistant principal in the stomach and drew on the walls.
The students were counting jelly beans as part of a math exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary School when the little girl began acting silly. That's when her teacher took away her jelly beans, outraging the child.
Minutes later, the 40-pound girl was in the back of a police cruiser, under arrest for battery. Her hands were bound with plastic ties, her ankles in handcuffs.
"I don't want to go to jail," she said moments after her arrest Monday.
No charges were filed and the girl went home with her mother.
While police say their actions were proper, school officials were not pleased with the outcome.
"We never want to have 5-year-old children arrested," said Michael Bessette, the district's Area III superintendent.
The district's campus police should have been called to help and not local police, he said.
Bessette said campus police routinely deal with children and are trained to calm them in such situations.
Under the district's code of student conduct, students are to be suspended for 10 days and recommended for expulsion for unprovoked attacks, even if they don't result in serious injury. But district spokesman Ron Stone said that rule wouldn't apply to kindergartners.
"She's been appropriately disciplined under the circumstances," he said.
The girl's mother, Inda Akins, said she is consulting an attorney.
"She's never going back to that school," Akins said. "They set my baby up."

Look on the bright side; at least they didn’t taser this one.

This has gone too ****ing far.
#1, the freaking police have no business arresting a little kid like that.

#2 problem, and the bigger one is "She's never going back to that school," Akins said. "They set my baby up."
A proper parent under those circumstances would have beat the little brat until her ass fell off, and made her apologize to everyone she hit. So in a way, #1 is a result of parents not doing their job, plus the fact that schools aren't allowed to spank kids anymore (parents spanking their kids IS ok in FL, BTW).

Arresting and cuffing a 5yr old is too much. I'm sure a lawsuit is coming.

BTW, the child's violent reaction to losing her jellybeans indicates an immediate need for psychiatric help IMO.

Anyone seen The Simpson's where they had "Baby Cuff's" in Florida for Maggie? Personally, I found that funny as heck.

I think handcuffing the ankles went too far, and I don't LIKE the tie straps on the wrists, but what can you do to restrain a child that may never have had discipline without hurting her or doing something that caused her to hurt herself as she struggled. It is easy for us sitting back to watch to judge because we weren't there worrying that ANYTHING we did could hit the news or worse.

I won't run the cop's actions down without MORE information. Since it sounds like no real harm came to the girl, I don't have a problem with it that warrants restitution. I hope his police department stand up for him unless that MORE information implicates that he really did go out of line to do this! Maybe the little brat will behave next time. Kindergarden or not, no child should act so: either she needs a better home life (like more spankings) or treatment. Either way, it sounds like the actions of her parent is going to re-enforce the BAD actions and not encourage BETTER behavior.

How about handcuffing the mom and dad until they agree to get sterilized? LOL.

Sounds messed up all the way around. Plus as far as the police go it's danged if they do and danged if they don't.

But it's still the parents responsibility for the kids behavior.

Maybe we can just beat the parents when the brat acts up? Bet she'd be stopped real wuick.

rika i must agree with you, somewhat. i think the cops had batons to subdue uncontrolable detainees. why bother to cuff her, they should have held her down till momma got there, and beat the living **** out of momma, while telling her to learn to control her child. thats my 02.00 cents worth. :headbang:
