Taking into consideration the two previous threads in this forum, along with others I am aware of, I am becoming more aware than ever of the power of speed and ferocity in na attack. From a defensive point of view, being aware of one's surroundings, as well as consciously keeping some distance between yourself and potential threats.

On that vein, I'm wondering about your experiences from real life where either you or someone you knew were disabled or disabled a potential threat with a minimum (need I say one) of blows, grappling, etc.

Please share your experience. Thanks!

Well, once I walked out of a bar with a girl when suddenly I saw a fist out of the corner of my eye. At the time I was studying Kung-Fu pretty hard and my instincts kicked in. I blocked the punch, grabbed the wrist, locked the elbow with my other hand and sent him to the ground while locking that arm in an armbar. Soon as he smacked the pavement I stepped back and put the boot to him for a couple of minutes.

Turns out it was the girls boyfriend. Hell, I didn't know. Then again, in my drinking days I wouldn't have cared anyways.

They told us in Kung-Fu that if a fight lasts longer than 6 seconds you are in trouble. I believe that. Most I've been in (or seen) were decided by the second punch. That being said, I've only seen one guy who was knocked out with a punch. I've seen guys "punch drunk", I've BEEN punch drunk.....but only one who was actually knocked out.

Best advice I have is stay out of that side of town. Most of the trouble you'll find are at the bars. People who stay out of bars tend not to have to fight.

Yes,you're right...there's times when the longer it takes the more bad things can happen.Although ,tHATS a two way street as well. I had a few fights in my youth that went on and on. They were of a serious nature, but the reason they actually as long as they did(considering they were street fights),was in the case of one(one on one-ofairly enclosed area behind a a construction site) was that we were of a similar experience/ability level, with the conditioning level being close as well.Another occasiopn began with one guy at the top floor of a high rise in Lowell, and contionued (by way of the stairwell)on th efifth floor with his friends.THAT was a handfull...Oddly enough, despite all of the hassle,I wound up largely unscathed.

I can think of 2 occasions where people were disabled. One occurred when a friend struck someone between the eyes with the tip of a 21" ASP. The other occurred when someone demanding a wallet was haymakered with a surreptitiously-donned set of brass knuckles.

Between the eyes?Always a good shot if you can get it;on occasion I've used that little "face breaker",although not with an ASP.Head butts, overhand punches, open hand shots.....oh yeah, and once with the end of a rolled up newspaper(Boston Herald,Sunday edition).
On one hand ,that CAN be a permanent closer with sufficient follw through or damage. On the other hand, you usually at leastcause enouh pain, blindness, shock to set him up for something else(i.e.a good knee to the nuts,or a body shot).Hey,no point in having to do things twice.

The ASP was less than impressive in most cases that I know of. The only "instant stop" that I know of was that one. Even then, it might well have been a psychological stop rather than a physically-disabling shot. After repeated failures, the ASP user is now a former ASP user, and totes a flat sap instead.

Agree that there are few instant disablers...most things require more than one hit to really put someone down. Elbows, knees, heavy clubs and blackjacks to the melon...all those come pretty close to "one shot stoppers", to borrow a term from 2 other voodoo science practitioners.

I was walking through the mall and felt an inept pickpocket fumble with my rear pocket. I grabbed his fingers and bent them back til they snapped them. when I turned he was reaching into his pocket so I continued to wtwist the fingers and kicked him HARD in the side of the knee. when his hand came ot of the pocket a cheap knife fell to the floor soI was justified. over in about 15 seconds.

Its not fancy, but in one of my more unfortunate moments I broke someones nose quite spectacularly with the heel of my palm (yes, the intent to STOP him was there). It didnt do what it was supposed to do (I'm glad it didnt) but at the time him and his buddies were doing their best to put me on ice. They just about succeeded. I'm glad he wasnt killed, but if I was in the position again, I would do the exact same thing. He didnt get back up to fight anyhow.

The only other "one shot stop" that I know of was a headbutt to the jaw. The guy lost a couple teeth; it moved him to go someplace else for a fight.
