Thought about putting this in the "General BS" forum but decided this was a more neutral place for it.
Honest question - is there anti-Canadian sentiment in the U.S.? If so, why?
The US has a long history of demonizing the "other". We do it amongst ourselves. We do to foreign nations. It's just sort of this fun dementia that we enjoy.

My son was in Canada recently, and he liked it. He returned mostly because he was not permitted to work there and I was running out of funds to keep him there longer but he enjoyed his stay.
One of my professors visits Canada sometimes and he speaks highly of it, and has especially praised the police force who he says receive training in ethics.
I remember visiting once, when I was small, during the summer; my Dad was attending a medical convention and took me along; all I can remember is the terrific train ride up and the beauty of the area where we stayed, an off-season ski resort.
I have very positive feelings about Canada, based on those experiences.

O Canada, our home and native land,
True patriot love, in all thy sons command
With glowing hearts we see thee rise
the true north strong and free
from far and wide, O Canada,
we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land, glorious and free,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
Well thanks all, just a curiosity really.

Being how I am married to a Canadian...
No, there isn't an anti-canadian sentiment. Just like, in spite of what propaganda the CBC puts outs, I find most Canadians don't have an anti-american sentiment.
There are things the Canadian Gov't has done that I don't like, but there are plenty of things my own Gov't has done that I don't like.
Canada has been a very good neighbor and has fought along side of the US in every conflict, save the latest in Iraq. (They were there in Afghanistan)

Hey, she was quite good as 'God' in "Dogma". Of course, she wasn't allowed to speak in that role.

Thats a hard bargain Wyly...
Seriously though, it was a question thats been in my head for awhile now. I dont think there is much anti-American sentiment here, things are pretty friendly all around. Sometimes the border crossing is a little annoying though. :duck:

I think there's sentiment against the Canadian government (same sentiment as against our own), and some against the Quebecois, they tend to be rude and offensive, but that's because they really try to be french. But from what I hear, most Canadians have a problem with the Quebecois, so. . .
But in general, no, in fact I think a lot of people think that we're the same country! (Blame that on our public schools).
Dad has travelled extensively in Canada and likes it a lot; particularly Western Canada. Never been there myself but I'm quite fond of my Canadian friends here on this board.

I see it as kinda like two high schools that are near each other and have a common rivalry. Of course, when someone out of state comes, they band together. Or at least that's the way it used to work...
This is all media driven BS, or just someone jerking your chain, thats all.
I haven't, nor have I ever heard anyone I know, say anything bad about Canada or Canadians. In fact, that is the one and only country I want to visit, but I'll just stay away from Quebec.

I have, but its usually half-hearted, and more a commentary on socialists than Canadians.
The Candians I know usually speak a lot more badly of Canada than Americans do, but again, they're bitching about socialists. Oh, they also bitch about people from Quebec...on that matter, I'd agree with them. The only thing worse than a Frenchman is a wannabe Frenchman!

What's really funny, is even the French hate the Quebecois.
Oh well. Canada is really easy to get around in, seeing how they only have one road.
(Highway one - the Trans-Canada highway)
South Park had an excellent wizard of oz parody that played on this...."follow the only road..."
