How's about a series of reload drills?

5M, starting pointed in at the target

Shoot 1 Reload via Speed Reload [slide in battery] Shoot 1

Shoot 1 R via Emergency Reload [slide locked back] Shoot 1

Shoot 1 R via Tac Reload Shoot 1

Shoot 1 Reload via 'Reload with Retention' Shoot 1

Record time and see which reload(s) makes the most sense for you.

Sounds interesting. Please explain what a Tac Reload and Reload with Retention means. Assume reload comes from mag carrier on belt.

Thanks

Tac Reload involves obtaining spare mag from belt pouch, bringing it up to the gun, removing mag in gun, inserting fresh mag and stowing old/partially depleted mag.

Reload with Retention involves removing mag from gun, stowing it, obtaining fresh mag from belt, inserting fresh mad into gun.

RwR has you manipulating only one mag at a time whereas the Tac Reload has you manipulating two mags in one hand.

For the tac reload must the mag be stowed or can it be held in the weak hand horizontal to the slide?

Do you have to physically remove the mag from the gun or can you just push the mag catch and let it drop free?

Ankeny,

Why not run the tac load both ways [stowing the mag and keeping it in hand]?

I'm curious to see the times will a varied skill level with the assorted techniques.

Rika,

You just hit the button and let the mag fall for the Speed & Emergency reloads, but you physically remove and stow it on the Tac & RwR reloads.

I shot this today after work. Pistol is a Baer PII, Blade Tech holster, Safariland paddle style mag pouch on weak side. Used an IPSC target down one.

Shoot, speed reload, shoot - 1.51 seconds
Shoot, slide lock reload, shoot - 1.99 seconds
Shoot, tac reload stowed in hip pocket, shoot - 3.69 seconds
Shoot, reload with retention in hip pocket, shoot - 3.04 seconds

I did the drill before I read your reply but I'll do the tac and retention with mag in hand in the next few days.
