I was sound asleep this morning and got awakened by the sound of my wife saying "squirrel!" next to me. She spotted a squirrel outside the bedroom window. I thought there was no chance my bleary eyes were going to focus anytime soon, but what the heck. I put on my shorts and grabbed the 597, walking out onto the porch. Didn't see anything right away, but I just stood there quietly. Eventually, the little bugger climbed down the pine tree and jumped onto a small branch that was low enough for me to be able to see from the porch. He saw me about the same time the crosshairs were on him and I squeezed the trigger. This is the first time I have seen closeup what a .17 HMR will do to a squirrel head. Ground beef, man, ground beef.
But another bamboo chewing varmint has bitten the dust.
Congratulations. What a great way to wake up.

You mean waking up hunting, or waking up with a woman whispering in your ear?
Either one is more than acceptable. ;)

Well my wife didn't whisper. So imagine you are sound asleep and someone says "Squirrel!" in a moderately loud voice. It will sure snap you out of any dream you were in the middle of, let me tell you. Matter of fact this isn't the first time it has happened, and we laugh about it all of the time. She says it in a funny way, kind of drawn out like "squirrrrrrrrel". :)
Yeah, the bullet must have hit the squirrel right in the nose as he was looking at me. Kind of gross, really, seeing a headless squirrel sitting there on that branch for an instant before dropping to the ground. That .17HMR must explode on impact. I know I wouldn't want to get hit with one! 17 grains or not, it would sure rearrange whatever it hits on you.
