I have been shooting my S&W 1917 quite a bit lately and came up with a couple of questions someone might know the answer to. I would like to get a WWI style holster for it, either original or reproduction, would anyone know a source? The pouch pictured is pretty close to one I have, but mine has WWII style button snaps and I can't figure out how the pouch is used. The top pockets are too small to hold half-moon clips, and the bottom two pockets are too deep to be used quickly. Anyone have a clue?

Oh dang when I used to get the Shotgun Knews there was a place that had a boat load of WW-I, WW-II and earlier reproduction military gear plus some authentic stuff.
One thing I remember though they advertized slightly varying items stuff from issue to issue.
Just can't recall the name; it might be worth it to get a copy and look for them.
Feast your eyes on these. The 1917 revolver holster is what they carried the Colt and S&W M1917 in. I had an excellent original exactly like that which I sold for $150 a few years ago when I was hard up for cash. Wish I still had it.

Ain't cheap, are they? Thanks, RIKA and Mabu Khan. I'll check out SGN, for an original, if not I'll follow up on RIKA's catalog. $85.00 for a holster? I only paid $129.00 for the gun! Just kidding, I know what good leather costs. My Wife's no help. "oh, get that pretty one in the middle."
Leather is incredibly expensive nowadays; especially that made in the US. Much of the cost is labor though leather is going up in price also. I can vouch for one thing though. El Paso Saddlery makes a top notch product that is extremely close to the original. I wish you luck in finding original WW1 leather in good shape for less than $150 - $200. Collectors snap it up.
Get a Shotgun News if you can. There was a company that advertised WW1 repro leather - foreign made - in the $40 - $50 range if they are still in business.

You'd think with all the beef we eat there whould be plenty of skins left over.
What are they doing now a days throwing the hides away?
Hey Terry, check this one out. I really like it and its only $39.95. It even has the leg strap.

Here's a picture of the pouch, I can't figure it out!
Terry, please give the overall dimensions of the pouch and the dimensions of the compartments. Are there any markings. This will really help.

RIKA< with top flap opened it's 17 1/2 " by 5 " wide. Closed it would be roughly 3 & 1/2" shorter. What is printed on the flap is Bag,sicc stk. no.8105-658-1308, which is no doubt a Federal stock number. It may not even be for the 1917 S&W, but the appearance is so like the one in Surplus Guns magazine, that I thought it was.
Okay, now what size are the individual snap closed compartments inside. Are they all the same size or are some larger than others? You have a very interesting carrier.

The top poch goes the full length of the carrier, about 12-13". The Two lower pockets are divided into about one inch wided sections, also I just noticed the top flap has MK-356/G on the flap. The carrier has the old style "hooks" rather than the metals clips from the '60's era.
Here is a link for a replica WW1 revolver clip pouch. Its located about 1/2 way down the page. Not much help but at least you can see what one looks like.
