This forum is dead and I really hate it. It was nice while it lasted because we could post some targets, with or without timers, and just have some fun comparing what we did. FUN, thats all it was without personal competition. FUN where we tried to better ourselves. Well its gone and nobody posts here any more.

Am I the only one who feels a loss?

You are not alone. I had high hopes for this forum too.

Let's keep plugging at. I will try to post some stuff this week, maybe try the Defensive Rifle Drill.

Maybe if we keep at it, more will join in. What do ya think ?

It's my fault for not pushing it. I've been way too busy to devote the time I had hoped.

However, all is not lost - yet.

Each of you is free to start a challenge. Even if you are the only ones to participate, that is something.

I have noticed on other sites that it really takes a "critical mass" before it takes off and is self sustaining.

Dark, Rika, Ballistic - each of you can post a challenge.

I just started hitting the monthly IDPA matches around here. Some of the scenarios I view as more than a bit silly, and they sometimes want me to count my rounds or not just drop magazines that have rounds in them. I ignore them and eat the penalties and just shoot how I think the stage should be shot.

But if you wants challenges, I gots challenges!

Here's a post I made on another forum:

Interesting baseline drills courtesy of Andy Stanford

Here are some drills that I scooped out of the back of Surgical Speed Shooting that seemed to be pretty good tests of ability:

The “Bill Drill” (also mentioned in one of the posts above) developed by Bill Wilson:

Draw and fire 6 rounds. All shots should be “A zone hits” at 7 yards. An IPSC Jedi can do this in 2 seconds or less. Mr. Stanford says that 3 seconds is “quite fast”.

For an overall evaluation of shooting skills, Stanford likes a drill developed by John Farnam. Stand 7 yards from a silhouette target loaded with 6 live rounds and 1 dummy. The dummy round should neither be in the chamber nor the last round in the magazine. Fire 6 body shots and perform a tap-rack-bang drill when appropriate. Reload and then shoot 2 head shots. Move when not firing and vocalize appropriately (“Stop!” or “No!” are considered appropriate. “Here’s a lead enema, you @#%@#%!!!!” looks bad in court.) Zero misses and at least 50% vital zone hits are a good minimum standard for this drill. An accomplished shooter should keep 90% in the A zone (Farnam requires 100%, but Stanford feels this might slow people down too much). Here’s a rough guide that Stanford gives for acceptable times, with all times given in seconds:

Beginner Intermediate Expert Master
Start signal to 1st round: 2.5 2.0 1.5 1.25
Splits between shots: 1.0 .5 .35 .25
Malfunction clearance: 2.0 1.5 1.0 .75
Reload: 3.75 2.75 2.25 2.0

Stanford also likes the Dozier drill, which I found detailed here: http://home.sprynet.com/~frfrog/courses.htm

“This is best run with steel reactive targets. Five targets are placed in front of the firing position at ranges from 7 to 15 yards. Shooter starts with back to targets and on signal engages each target. Score is 5 points for each target knocked down, -10 points for any missed target, divided by the time in seconds. Par time is about 5 seconds.

A useful modification is to have a sixth target at 50 yards and require a tactical reload behind cover before engaging it.”

If you don’t have gongs, any ol’ thing that serves as a reactive target works…balloons, large crackers, styrofoam plates, coffee cans, etc.

Okay, I'm going to post a challenge where I'll be competing against myself. You guys are welcome to compete with me though.

Here goes: Off Hand Challenge. Shoot your targets with your weak hand.

Shooting with my left hand is really hard. Despite efforts to strengthen my hand and arm, the gun twists and I even get hammer bite in the web between my thumb and forefinger. Poor technique I know so thats what I'm going to work on. Will post pics of targets from time to time, hopefully each showing improvement.

Aslan, it is not your fault, it takes participation too. Those of us that enjoy the forum but stopped posting in it deserve an equal amount of blame. That being said, let's do some shooting, and post some results.

Wylycoyte, some good ideas there. I am going to try to shoot Wed. Will try a few and maybe even make up one.

Rika, got a distance and round count for the weak hand shooting ? I did an IDPA qualifier last week, w/ my S&W 625 ( I am very new to wheelguns). I did good, made MM (2 sec from SS). I did really well on the weak hand portion, surprised myself. I will shoot whatever you come up with.

I am going to shoot the Defensive Rifle Drill w/ My Sav 99 Scout, just for kicks. will post the results.

And some people are such losers that they threw away their ability to even touch a gun.
