Headin' up to Kansas for a whitetail hunt in December. Here are some photos of a couple of the deer that've been harvested on the place. Can't wait!
Best,
Jon
Good luck. Let me know if you find a recipe for those antlers. :)

Lol! Thanks. Will do. Actually, I used to cook a LOT of venison, but the arrival of kids and other things that take a bunch of extra time sorta put that on the back burner. I got a new crock pot for my birthday (I think the giver is gettin hungry), and I pulled out the old recipies the other day. I think I'll get back into it this year.
Best tip for cookin' venison - get yourself a meat thermometer!
Best,
Jon
I don'tthink you have time. Send irtto me, i'll send you an image of the cooked meal, and you can feel happy without wasting the time cooking that nasty old meat. I'll do that for you as a special favor. ;)
I cook a lot because (1) I like to and (2) my wife's cooking always lacks seasoning and tastes like boiled water to me. With that said, we've gotten to were I almost can't stand anything but "wild meat." I put that in quotes because I still love beef, but I can't enjoy meat that someone ELSE has prepared. I like it cut MY way and ALL of the fat removed, and parts used for certain meals the way i think it should be done. Granted, none of this means I do it the right or normal way - just MY way. It really comes down to freshness and getting the fat ALL out.
That does make some people nervous when they come over to eat (I had wild goat and gator tacos for supper last night, wild sow stew the night before, etc.) if they are only used to eating store-bought meat, but who cares what them twerps think....lol.

Godallmighty; I'd forgotten how large the deer in other states can get. (Haven't hunted anywhere but Arkansas and east Texas since 1982...) We have a name in Arkansas for the deer in the first pic.
We call it a "cow"...

Ain't they somethin'???? I have never had a chance to go hunt deer anywhere north of Tennessee. This'll be my first trip to the midwest, and I can't wait!!!!!!

Oh, and Rika - by the way, take a look at the photos - see the forage the deer are lying in? That's Imperial Whitetail Clover. If you'll look down at the lower right corner of the second photo, you'll see a few three-leaf plants that are as big around as the guy's hand. That's no foolin' - it's for real! We started the entire food plot industry, and we actually breed many of the plants we use in our blends out of scratch. Two perennial clovers that we built and own are Advantage and Insight ladinos. Those are in that blend.

Well, we got skunked ... but, we had a ball. Up from Alabama to Tennessee for a couple of days, and then we crossed the Mississippi River from Kentucky into Missouri on a ferry boat (we took our time!)
The neat thing about the ferry was that the tug that moved it was connected to the barge by a swivel that allowed the tug to just turn around, while still connected to the center of the side of the barge and head the other way.

Well, we got up there, and that's when the massive cold front (a couple of weeks ago) hit. I hear temperatures were a 100-year-record low. I sure wouldn't argue with the weather man - it was flippin' COLD. -17 one morning. We were pretty careful.
The only living thing I saw during those days (except for a constant stream of coyotes) was a mole that surfaced in my blind. We kept each other company for awhile until he departed for parts unknown.

So, we burned over 1,000 miles each way, and about 10-days worth of time, and no deer. And ...
... I'd do it again tomorrow. In fact, next year ...
... I probably will.

Jon
