Firearms tracking device urged - The Boston Globe
Councilor Rob
Consalvo wants to put a tracking device into newly manufactured guns and
have legal gun owners retrofit their firearms so owners and police can
locate and retrieve stolen guns the same way police use a computer chip to
locate stolen cars.
''Let's use that same technology to track weapons so we know where they
are when they're stolen or bought illegally," he said. ''I think it's a
common-sense idea."
Consalvo has asked Springfield-based Smith & Wesson, one of the world's
largest gun manufacturers, to meet with him to discuss the proposal.
Tom Taylor, Smith & Wesson's vice president of marketing, said yesterday
that the company had not yet reviewed the proposal, and declined to
comment.
Some gun-rights advocates would likely oppose any effort to install
tracking devices. Jim Wallace of the Gun Owners' Action League said that
tracking devices would threaten individual privacy.
''We don't live in a society where the government starts tracking the
things we own," Wallace said. ''It's just simply absurd."
Gun-related arrests have gone up 37 percent in the last year, and gun
violence has risen 77 percent in the last three years, Consalvo said. Many
guns, he added, are stolen from legal owners or smuggled into
Massachusetts from surrounding states and sold illegally at flea markets
and gun shows.
Consalvo acknowledged that the cost of manufacturing guns with such a
device could be high, but that it would be worth it.

If they can install it then it can be removed. What a stupid idea.

Yup, thats a seriously flawed idea. Mind you I guess we could all tape a clapper onto our firearms. At least then we could find them in the dark. Our long lost keys are probably right there too :D

Common sense? No, nonsense. As Rika said, it can be removed. Also, what do you about the millions of guns already in circulation?
Another blundering attempt to want to be seen "doing something" about crime. How about dealing with the criminals?

Sorry, we aren't allowed to hold individuals accountable for their own actions.
Inanimate objects are to be feared an loathed.
Don't you know that as soon as a good person picks up a gun, they become ruthless killers and robbers and rapists?
People can't be held personally accountable - it just isn't fair. For example, there was a certain convicted felon who used to frequent this board. He'd constantly talk about how it wasn't his fault, that it was the JBT's and "wannabe hitlers" that caused his down fall. It was certainly not his actions.

I'm surprised everyone is still on about gunshows selling firearms to criminals. Do you see a lot of 'bangers at gunshows?
It's like saying junkies buy crack at pharmacies.

A GPS receiver is a RECEIVER, you need some sort of transmitter before anyone can track you. It is far easier to build a small receiver than a transmitter that has any range. receivers are basically passive devices requiring little power. Transmitters are active devices and require more power, especially to get any range out of them.
They are getting smaller, but they aren't as easy to shrink and they do require power.
RFID's which are on the tiny end of things don't have their own power source. They are powered by the radio signal that is used to read them. They are very short range and it doesn't take much to defeat the signal. (They still can't get 100% read rates from packages in a single pallet, even at very short distances, 2-3 ft.)
The whole tracking device idea is a pipe dream at the moment and will prove unworkable in firearms.
I do know they will continue to improve the technology, but there's a lot of political issues with just RFID's on consumer goods, let alone firearms.
Worth watching though.

I think it is a great idea,... gotta keep tabs on where my guns go while I am at work,... you all know that they have a mind of their own and wander about causing fear and mayhem.....
This guy has got the right idea,.......Webcam (http://www.assaultweaponwatch.com/) Keeps it under surveilance 24/7..... Still hasn't moved from the last time I checked. Must have done something pretty bad to be in 'time-out' that long..... :dgrin:

Just what i want, for my future mauser to ahve a little flashing red light on it. When don't we stick a little red light on all adulterer's (clinton) front fly in memoriam of their...past history.

It is what happens when lawyers run the gov't and command the army.
The IDEA, people, is make guys scared of buying modern guns, have the gunmakers go out of biz, etc. The pos's will try anything, and use your tax $ to do it, too.

This sounds like a type of RFID chip.
HINT, HINT: RFID's don't like Mr. Microwave.
RFID's don't like Mr. Microwave.
Always remember to unload a gun before microwaving it....or bringing it on the side side of an airless plant.

The NEXT time I see you call somone a bad name outside of the RR, I will send you on another 3 day pass to the RR only. This is your first and final warning.

Yeah, that should have said "sun side." Do you want me to proof every post you've ever made? I might find one or two where you didn't do something wrong. Hmmm, I take that back since you seem unable to use proper capitalization.
So, kettle, I don't think you need to call any pot black.
I don't leave stuff that confuses the meaning of the post, and if you EVER posted 10% as much as I do, you MIGHT have a point. But you never will, so you DON'T have a point.

Yes you do. 90% of your posts lack context. Half the time everyone has to guess what it is you're trying to say. It gets easier over time since most of your posts are the same things repeated over and over and over again.
Your post count is a dumb statistic that proves nothing. (You are the only person that attaches any sort of meaning to the number of posts you make. The significance of that seems to escape you.)
He does have a valid point concerning your posts. It appears you won't ever get a clue and won't be happy until you are either outright banned or Rich pulls the plug on this site.

Andy, I really don't care about ho many posts somesone makes - it is the quality of the posts - and not the quantity - that matter to almost EVERYONE except you. BUT, I don't like bad math. It shows a weakness in mental capacity that bothers me, so I will humor youi for a second.
This is pretty much accurate as of 1pm on 12Jun06"

10% of your posts would be 8803*.10= 880.3 posts, or no more than 881 posts. I've got over twice that, so I guess that means (1) I might have a point, (2) you were wrong saying I'd never post 10% as much as you, and (3) you have issues with basic mathematical concepts.
Combine the last 2 points: apparent inability to do simple math and a proven capacity to make a mistake. I don't think I'll trust ANY of YOUR recomendations (like powder recs for certain bullet types)...EVER. You don't seem to be able to figure out, as verifiable proof, what would be safe and what would not be safe.
Hmmmm, your inability to do simple math seems to indicate that maybe you aren't as quick as you claim (I mean, can you subtract single digit numbers from single digit numbers?) and neither are your projectiles (can you even figure averages or a proper velocity?). THIS would explain a lot to many of us. If you need help figuring out your fuel economy some time, let use know. We'll do it for you, or you might start claiming a Dodge Ram V10 gets 456 miles per gallon.
