Ejector Question

I know this is trivial but:

Why is it that the ejector must be changed on the 1911 when converting to anything other than a .22 kit?

I figured the case was indeed involved but a .45 down to a .22 is a big step, and the .22s dont require the mod.

The little 22 case is too small to even hit the ejector since its way off on the left side. Maybe when the case blows back and the extractor pulls it out it just flips out under its own momentum. I have a conversion unit but its back somewhere in the safe. If I can dig it out, I'll look.
