I JUST TRADED FOR A BARRETT M99!!! It is a cool toy I have shot it before. Questions
1. which GI bullet is the best for accuracy?
2. What is the best place to buy ammo?
3. Is the LEE .50 loading kit of decent quality?
4. Is there a place to get reliable trajectory charts for various loads?
5. Which powder is the most accurate the IMR or the Ball?
Thanks for help with these newby questions.
I talked a friend into letting me build berms at the end of his bean field1500M at max with a waterway at 1000, and aother at about 550, can you say Fifty range?)
Any advice would be appreciated. also what is the general opinion of the M99 as to quality and accuracy?
Rhino
I can't help you with the .50 but ... ((drool)) I want one sooo bad. Only problem is that theres no place to shoot it. Anyway, glad for you and wanting to hear tales of your nifty 50.

Congrats Rhino! The M99 is an excellent choice! Damned nice rifle.
Make sure you get a scope with plenty of eye relief, though. Nighforce makes an excellent one.
If I get a chance later on, I'll try to give you some answers to your questions. Kind of tight on time right now........

I never reloaded or shot that particular model just some prototypes that a friend designed and builds as licensed mfg.,.
But they are a hoot to burn powder with!
And once you shoot a .50BMG rifle pretty much every other hand held rifle is a small bore. :dgrin:

I JUST TRADED FOR A BARRETT M99!!! It is a cool toy I have shot it before. Questions
1. which GI bullet is the best for accuracy?
Surprisingly enough many people claim the armor piercing (black tip) is the more accurate of all the military projectiles.
2. What is the best place to buy ammo?
I've bought from Ammoman.com before with good results. Most will be Talon rebuilds, however, which seem to work OK. If you want to load your own, I have bought projectiles from http://hi-techammo.com/. No problems with any of the stuff they have sent me.
3. Is the LEE .50 loading kit of decent quality?
Never seen it. I bought an Ammomaster with the .50BMG adapter. Does a good job. The RCBS die set I bought was crap, however. Broke decapping pins with every second or third case I resized. Bought a die set from C&H Tool & die (http://www.ch4d.com/) that have been working flawlessly for me. If you get the die set, get them TiN coated. Both sizer and seater dies.
4. Is there a place to get reliable trajectory charts for various loads?[/quoe]
There was a guy on Biggerhammer.com selling a book of trajectory info, but it was a long time ago. Matter of fact, I actually saw the book at a recent gun show, so it is out there if you look hard enough for it. Sorry, I don't remember anything else about it.
[QUOTE=Rhino]5. Which powder is the most accurate the IMR or the Ball?
Most people claim the best accuracy with VihtaVuori powders, but I've never tried it myself. Been using surplus military powders such as 5010 and WC 860 with fair results.
Data from VihtaVuori Powder Co:
647g FMJBT Speer...24N41...218.5 gr...2705 FPS starting, (240.6g MAXIMUM LOAD @ 2960 FPS)
647g FMJBT Speer...20N29...239.1 gr...2768 FPS starting, (262.3g MAXIMUM LOAD @ 3020 FPS)
Data from Hodgdon Powder Co:
647g FMJ...........H870....210.0 grains.....2789 FPS
647g FMJ...........H5010....205.0 grains....2710 FPS
655g FMJ...........H50BMG....248.0 grains.....3029 FPS
750g AMAX.......H50BMG....233.0 grains.....2800 FPS
800g BAR Solid...H50BMG....225.0 grains.....2725 FPS

People have won 1000 yard matches using this gun, and people think very highly of it.
Get yourself some spotter tracer and incendiary rounds if you can find them. I think Ammoman may have them. Now those, my friend, are damned fun to shoot! But bear in mind that they are a fire hazard, so treat them accordingly.

Well here, let me show you the door for three days, bud. If you want to continue talking in that manner here about myself and any of the moderators, then you can either hit the road out of here under your own steam, or I can just ban you permanently.
Matter of fact, there is someone who used to frequent this site who seemed to enjoy exactly that kind of talk who I understand is now running his own message board. Perhaps you can join up with him there.....

If any mod wants to edit my post to remove the naughtyness, go right ahead.
I'm pretty sure you can get around those filters with a decent proxy. You're going to have to learn to get around it somehow, because its only a matter of time before they start blocking anything that relates to weapons.

Hmm, I was thinking maybe you need to get a computer at home. Nowadays, having a computer and internet access is pretty much becoming a necessity to stay in touch with the world. When Comcast craps out on me, I feel absolutely lost without internet access.......

Yeah come on Rhino, hang in there.
If you keep a look out for a used but workable PC one'll come along.
If you want I'll keep my eyes peeled for a "free to a good home" one. And that's not unheard of in these parts.

OK guys I sacrificed a virgin to the gods of the microprocessors and resurected my PC. I live a jillion miles from ANY hi speed internet so am on a dial up. I am only home from 10PM to 4 AM so little time at home so the posts that are banned I will view at home. The only reason I have time to work on it now is our city where I work gor fragged by 2 tornados Sunday night and there is still no school. Being a survivalist nutbag out in the middle of nowhere with a generator and supplies has some advantages.

1. GI bullets for accuracy for get a bout it. Your going to have to go for the 750gr A-max. But if you get the AP black tips they seem to be the best.
Just get some surplus stuff from Sportsman Guide or some other place. This way you could shoot and get some brass to start reloading.
2. Like above I got the best deal from Sportsman guide.
3.Yes it is good..I use it for not only my BMG but my 338LM and even my 308. It comes with a conversion to allow you to use regular dies. Only thing get the so called auto primer feed system if your going to load the smaller calibers.
4. I crono my stuff then use either point blank or Sierra Infinity to do drop charts. If you go to Snipers Hide in the Long Range forum there is a guy that has some charts from SOE....Check his website out and he has 408 Chy tach vs 338LM vs 50 BMG charts on his site.
5. So far I have used the BMG50 and H-1000 with good results.
