View Full Version : My(hopefully soon to be) mauser...and my dilemma

Ahoy hoy!
I am 16(don't panic) and an avid military collector/historian. I can't get enough of it. I own 6 swords, and a replica blunderbuss. I hope to add a Mauser to my collection. The Kar98k is preferable, but I will settle for a close variant(turkish, czech etc). I have found one is good condition.(I won't tell where because one of you guys might swoop in and order it).
Anyway, my father is a retired detective from NYC with a few police pistols. (his father's and his own). Odds are you've figured out my problem. The FFL/C&R license. I would probably only own a mauser, since old time bolt rifles are my only interest. Is there a license option for someone my age...even if it is some sort of custodial joint license with my dad.
PS: You won't turn on the news and see this: :uzi: :madeuce: NMostly because I ahve my wits, and second of all, a mauser isn't a massacre weapon. If I was an up-and-coming slobodan milosevic, I would have been asking about an MP44...
Hello Rommel, there is no option that I know of for a person under age to obtain a C&R license. Your father can get one if he wants but any rifles must stay in his name until he transfers possession to you.
Luck with your Mauser hunt.

No, there is no way someone your age can get an FFL of any type, nor can you legally buy any firearm on your own.
You'd have to have your dad buy it for you. If he got a C&R license, then the rifle would be in his name, and he'd have to account for it if he gave it to you (which he legally couldn't do until you're 18).

That is really odd. You would think there would be some sort of limited ownership. I mean, in some places, you can get a boating license at 14, driving permit at 16 etc.
Well, atleast we share the exact same name(he is sr, and I am jr).
It is one thing to buy an assault rifle, it is another to buy a mauser that is best left sitting on the mantle.
Thats the way the laws are written. Some of the western and southern states have laws that are more lenient but NYC does not. Doing something illegal would be very bad for both yourself and your Dad.

well luckily he only worked in NYC, I live in nassau county, a nearby suburb that doesn't fall under the totalitarian jurisdiction concerning rifles in NYC.
Well my father doesn't have an FFL, but he does have the NY state license...which means he can have it shipped to a dealer. If anyone has links for a gun site that conveniently dells to dealers, please tell me.

I've shipped 100 rifles to New York, and the only thing different than the rest of the US is that a signed FFL is required for aquisitions as well as firearms a dealer disposes of to another dealer.
99% of those I shipped to NY were purchased by a non-licensee.
There is a State Licensing requirement for long guns?

Just have your dad get it and hold onto it until it can be considered yours legally at some point. Honestly. I've had firearms of my own since I was very young.
Our society just freaks out too much about this kind of thing. A 16 year old kid who is intelligent enough to know what a Mauser is and have an appreciation for it should be allowed to... but I digress.

Depending no how much you're willing to pay, Mausers range in ALl price categories, if you're looking for a Model 98, i dont think that would qualify as a C&R rifle anyway. You can try [http://www.mitchellsales.com/ They have probably the BEST quality available, or Sarco in NJ, they always have a good selection of shootable mausers on hand, from REALLY beat-up and combat worn, to pretty good shape.

98 Mausers are C&Rs, but few would be antiques (not requiring an FFL).
Mitchell's are expensive, they are NOT '98s (they are Yugo M48s), but are pristine. If you want a good looking shooter with no history, and don't have a problem paying premium for others to clean your weapon, these are great.
