So I just stumbled across the website while looking for info on an SHTF situation and have a few questions.

-What would you reccomend for an SHTF bag
-As for weapons I was thinking
-Springfield xd-45
-maybe a saiga ak-style weapon
-remington 870
I already have a few like a savage 110, 10/22, various single shot shotguns, an old mossberg 500 but would like to keep the previous ones a few for a grab and go

An 870 would definately be a good weapon to have around if thing got exciting.

If I were going to buy a Saiga, I'd just go ahead and buy a Romanian AK. The AK is a fine weapon. It needs very little maintenance, magazines can be had cheaply, and it's reliability is legendary.

As for the XD45..........well, I want one myself. :)

If you mean the express flavor of the 870, I am NOT a fan of them. Forget the "jamming" issues in the 20 gauges and just think abouyt the field stripping. Try field stripping them in low light leves with cold, wet hands (like rabbit hunting!), and you'll be VERY likely too lose a sping. They are TOO DARN COMPLEX inside. They are much more complex than they need top be. Get a Mossberg 500 and field strip it right next to the 870 Express....and you'll see what I mean. I'd rather have one old, worn out Mossberg 500 over 5 NIB 870 Expresses.

The pump I have is a revalation by western auto supply. I looked it up and found that it was actually a mossberg 500 sold by someone else. I will look into the romanian ak but I think I'm goin g to get the xd-45 first.

Yep. My first gun that was ALL MINE (I though of it in caps like that as a kid....lol), given to me by my grandpa, was a .410 pump shotgun sold by Western Auto. Since then, I picked up a spare from a pawn shop (works great, but I got it as emergency spare parts). I've also got2 12-gauge Western Auto shotguns. They are all, of course, Mossberg 500s. Work better than anything out there today even after all they have been through. As far as I am concernewd, the only pump shotguns that ever needs to come into my possession are Mossbergs. I'm biased that way now, but good experiences will do that to you. :)

Hey thanks for the feed back guys. I love the shotgun and have only had a few problems. Like the ring on the slide repeatedly coming loose(locktite took care of it) and shells sticking in chamber after extended rapid firing(shells melting?) Other than that its just as reliable as anything I've shot. And will regular mossberg 500 combat-type parts fit it?

hey, HYDE![ha!] you WILL NEVER 'MELT' THE SHOTGUN HULLS/CASINGS IN A PUMP-ACTION 12 ga. from [?rapid-fire?]

I'd say a fine CENTER-FIRE SCOPED rifle![.270/.30 caliber]
the handgun ,,,is,,,some thing you just pick up and USE,,[i.e. buy/score what ever?,,,then get GOOD with it]

I LOVE SCATTER-SHOT WEAPONS! :dgrin:

Get a Glock 9mm and some flavor of mag-fed rifle and have done with it.

The XD series is great in many ways, but the finish reportedly sucks and right now there are few spare parts available. Not a good thing for a doomsday weapon. I'm sold on the Glock due to the repeated amounts of abuse it can stand up to and still keep on tickin'. Three's only a couple thing's I'd do to every Glock I'd use: swap out the cheesy factory plastic sights (they break off) and swap out the trigger spring for a NY-1/3.5#connector combo. There are plenty of other pistols that will do the trick, but they'll probably require more care. Depending on the nature of SHTF you're dealing with, that could be a significant issue.

The shotgun is pretty kickin' for a close-range engine of destruction but its limited by its weight, ammo capacity and reload rate. The 7.62x39, 5.56, 5.45, and 7.62x51 all have their plusses and minuses. Pick one and go with it.

Right now I'm liking my AK, but as I get more into gun games, the AR is showing itself to be an ergonomic wonder and is probably a better weapon right out of the box. After I chased away a bunch of the sharp edges on my AK with my Dremel and dicked with the selector lever, its a much friendlier firearm to use. I already have a Romanian side folder installed...Now I need to get my night sites on there, have a gunsmith open up the rear site a bit, throw on a tac light and I should be good to go. I should probably throw some foam or something on the metal folder. That thing is a might cold on the cheek in the winter.

I was seriously lookin into a glock 21 for a while too so I might look back into it. Just cause I want a .45. An AR just isnt in the budget right know so I'll probably stick to lookin at an AK. Just out of curiousity why the nine-mil though I'm open to any input

Because running that gun well and getting multiple rounds on threat means more than a bunch of specious internet arguments about how one service pistol caliber is "mo better" than the other.

Cheapass practice ammo + common caliber for SHTF resupply = :smokin:

All parts for a Mossberg 500 SHOULD fit the New Revelation by Western Auto. I've swapped stocks, barrels, anda few other things. All ofthose parts fit perfectly.

As far as Glocks go, I won't even let one in my house until they fix their firing pen issue (isn't reliable if you reload using WSP primers), change the stupid requirement for metal mags wrapped in plastic (what fricken idiot designed them with a plastic mag catch?), tighten the tolerances a little bit (so reloading the brass isn't as taxing - the brass REALLY expands in a Glock), and change the rifling so it is safe to shoot lead projectiles (SHTF and you can make lead projectiles, but not FMJs), and change the grips so they feel more ergonomic than a piece of 2x4....

Thanks guys, I've got some mixed opinions but alot of good info, I think I might start saving up for the xd-45 but if I change my mind the glock is only a couple hundred more. I'll try to figure out for syre if 500 parts will fit my scattergun(should I look for 500 or 500A?) and maybe some parts for my 10/22. Any opinions on it? It's one of my favorite guns, ultra reliable(if you use the right ammo, oops) and lots of hop-up parts.

I love the 10/22. Probably one of the most reliable guns I have even when poorly maintained
