Whats a "lert"?

A 'Lert" was an ancient animal similar to a cat. It was aware of most everything that was going on around it. It was said, that if one was able to surprise it, it would attack immediately, thus surprising the aggressor.
So, when people would be going into a dangerous area, they would be told to be ' a Lert'. Over time, the saying was just shortened to one word 'Alert".
