View Full Version : Yugoslavian SKS Versus Chinese

I finally got around to the Yugoslavian SKS against the Chinese. The Yugoslavian obviously, has the grenade launcher and bayonet, while the Chinese has had the bayonet and cleaning rod removed. Truth to be told, not a whole lot of difference in accuracy. About 3 1/2 inches was the norm at 100 yards with Wolf. Lapua tightened it up to 3 inches. I probably should have shot all three groups at the same time with the same rifle, rather than switching off every three shots. Trigger pull was quite different. The Chinese has a heavy pull with a really surprising let off. (Note the flyer on the left, a result of switching from the Yugoslavian) The Yugoslavian is somewhat lighter and the break is not so much of a surprise. Neither are in the M-16 or M-1 Garand class, but certainly adequate for combat or deer hunting. I like the Yugoslavian better, grenade launcher and all. Just my taste. The Chinese target is on the left, Yugoslavian on the right. The small silhoutte on the right was shot with my CZ82 because he pissed me off.

Thanks for the post Terry, good to know what you found with testing.
Those targets looked just like mine did 2 months ago out of my Yugo W/O GL ...
This dude I shoot with has no hobbies other than guns, anyhow I let him point my front site. I was playing around trying to bore site it when I realized the problem with my guns accuracy was not all ammo, my trigger was bad.
I reworked the livin daylights out of it and tweaked with the disconnector, I must say, I think it has improved a lot. The trigger is just plain sweet.
I won't swear on a Bible that it is more accurate yet, but I will try to post the target next time I get at a 100.
PS I like the color of your wood.

If you can get an old M59(Yugo w/out the grenade launcher) function tests would be more even, since that was always the weak point in the m59/66 system( gas bleed from the cutoff valve).Otherwise I like the Chicoms for the chrome bore and the Yugos for the beefy construction. Does the Chicom have the stepped ,heavy screew in barrel on a machined receiver??

I think that can vary a bit, IIRC. Some are just pressed and pinned.

Oh, I know they vary:having had several in the past.one ovcerseas bringback(frankensteined from barreled action and parts),as werll as an old EagleExam import.I was just curious for comparison with the Yugo.In my experience the yugo's(when there is no gas bleed from the grenade launcher;or with a straight M59) make great shooters. They did not have the chromium for the bores ,nor the (as advanced) metallurgy of other Combloc nations. So they tended top make their rifles a bit stouter for safety sake.

Its a nice gun for 50-100 yds but I wouldn't use mine for anything past that. In the competition that I used one in last December, I found that the group opened up significantly as the barrel warmed and barrel vibration magnified. I was so frustrated with my teams shooting during that match, I found myself trying to engage steel plates at 400 yards. Didn't hit squat, but it releaved frustration.

Garand, I think your being a bit too hard on the SKS. 50 to 100 yards? No way, no how. I can get 90% of 10 rounds from either the Chinese or one of my Yugoslavians in the kill zone on a Transtar II silohouett at 200 yards, and 65% at 300 yards. The rifle is not a tack driver, wasn't intended to be, and never will be. But a sincere rifleman can bring serious pee on an enemy at 300 Metres. You may be aiming center mass and hit him in the knee, but he's still hit and out of the game. It's a lot more accurate than an AK, but of course not on par with an M-1, M-16, or an FAL. My opinion is it's an absolutely viable weapon out to three hundred metres.

Well I'm already starting to gear up for the annual "Battle of the Bulge" match in December on an Army base about 9 hours from home. The temperature is generally about -25F. This year, i'll be more practiced with the SKS on the under 200 targets (match rules), but I plan to shine at 400 yards with my M1 Garand.

I have one that I bullpuped and it will do just about the same thing ,I can't see that well anymore so I use a red dot on it !!They are a very accurate weapon in their range !!!! Bullistics on them are almost identical to a 30-30 !!!!! :dgrin:

I compared my Yugo SKS side X side with a friend's barely ever used chinese SKS he bought years ago. The difference in quality of the Yugo over the chink one was glaring! The Yugo IS a top of the line model when compared to almost every other country's manufacture, especially the chinee & Romanian models. The lack of chrome does NOT matter in America. Chrome only helps in super cold or super humid climates, neither of which we have here.
And yeah, it's unfair to try to compare anything to a Garand. If SHTF, My Garand will speak for me. If they get too close, the Yugo SKS & AK barks pretty loud, too.

"The lack of chrome does NOT matter in America. Chrome only helps in super cold or super humid climates, neither of which we have here."
I believe the major benifit that was intended from the purpose of chrome lining a bbl. was for resistance to corrosive compounds in ammo that was in use at the time, especially mil. ammo, an added benny was that cleaning after an engagement didn't become an all consuming issue and another was that even the most ignorant peasant could give it a half-assed cleaning---or not and it wouldn't rot out...
