It came to my attention last week that some of the folks shooting at the local range couldn?t see where they were shooting at extended ranges of 300 yards to 600 yards. By not being able to see I mean where there bullets are hitting at these ranges. So being the compasionate person that I am I promptly told them get better glass, a scope or spotting scope. Wrong answer I found out real quick, I guess it was my mistake. I soon came to realize that not everyone can afford a $1500.00 scope and a $2000.00 spotting scope. Come to think of it I can't see bullet impacts with my Kiowa spotting scope a 600 yards either so I had to come up with an answer to the afore mentioned problem.
After cogitating for a couple of days I worked a little trial and error session with my younger brother. What we came up with is a reusable shoot and see target that anyone can build. For the 300 yard line we needed a target that was at least 18" diameter. We proceeded to cut a 4'x 8'-5/8" practical board sheet into 8, 24" squares. We next scribed an 18" circle on a piece of cardboard, and cut it out into an 18" circle. We placed it over the piratical board squares and painted an 18" flat black circle, then place a 3? orange target dot in the center. We drilled holes in the upper corners and using old coat hangers we made hooks out of them. We hung them up at 300 and began to shoot at them, works as intended bullets leave a nice easy to see splash on the front of the target just like a shoot and see.
We did the same for 600 yard targets but just cut the board into 2 - 48"x 48" pieces. These we used 2 x 4's screwed to the sides, put feet on them attached with hinges and braces so they could be folded and transported in the back of the truck, we painted standard 600 yard NRA sized black target circles on them with a 2" white boarder then we painted a 2" white boarder around the 10" 10 ring area. We then proceeded to shoot at them splashes as predicted were easy to see even with, less than premium optics. Mission accomplished, first time I get a chance I will post some pics of the targets for all to see.
