View Full Version : Not very new member friendly here

I'm a little disappointed. I came here to participate in this forum. However, it seems that some people like to hijack threads and post nonsensical posts.
There seems to be only a handful of people posting here - So, one would think that new members would be sought and wanted. However, that is not the case.
I know there will be people who will probably say, "good riddance - we didn't want ya here anyway." whenever someone posts a message such as this on a forum, someone always responds with something like that. That's fine - but remember... If ya do this to every new person, you few guys will always be here by yourselves...

I would appreciate if you would be a little bit more specific. I did not feel what you are feeling at all when I first arrived here. I was honest, too, about my lack of gun experience, starting off with only one gun.
I do see a small group that in general has stronger opinions that most groups, there are very few sheeple here, but I don't see anyone that is turning new folks away. On the contrary, if you can come up with interesting posts they are welcome.
I think life and this site have something in common, they are both what you make of them.

As for gun knowledge, I am not a newbie to guns. I am very knowledgeable, and run my own forum. I'm just new here.

Well, quite honestly, I have never, and do not ever intent to, FORCED people to stay on topic within a thread. People don't act like that in real conversations face to face, so why should message board discussions be treated any differently? When you are talking to someone in person, do you get upset that they may stray from the original topic you brought up?
Perhaps you run your own site differently. I have chosen to give members here pretty much the freedom to do whatever they like to do. If that sort of freedom frightens newbies and runs them off, well, I guess that is just the way it needs to be then. If they want rigid structure in all the conversations, with a big brother figure watching over the conversations to enforce that sort of structure, no, this is not the place for them.
Now is that because I think it is the better way to run a message board? Nope, not at all. I'm just lazy and have no intention of making management here a lot of work for myself.....

I am very knowledgeable, and run my own forum.
You need not be 'very knowledgeable' about guns to be here; I came here to appreciate the knowledge others have. But if you hang out here for a while, you can learn about people, and that may help you.
Of course, if your attitude is that you already know everything there is to know about guns AND people, I have to wonder why you are taking your valuable time to come here and be critical.

rich you and lucille go.
Hmmm, at the risk of being out of line, it sounds like Shipwreck would really like to become "Master Advisor" to Rich about this board. Why else would it be any skin off his nose? He doesn't like this; he doesn't like that; we're not friendly; we talk off topic ... blah blah blah. I've heard all that type of talk before from anal retentive control freaks who want to micro-manage every aspect of our lives.
This board is unique; unlike every cyber place I've ever been. People are respectful of each other (minor disagreements excepted) and we strive to help newcomers as much as each other. If a newbie comes in and doesn't act as if he knows it all then he is accepted. Know-it-alls and smarta$$es get called out and put in their place pretty quick.
Thanks Shipwreck but I like Armslocker just the way it is. Its friendly, fun, has fine people and between the bunch of us we can usually find an answer.
We might not be the biggest but we're the BEST!
Thanks Rich!

Forget I said anything. I should have been smart enough to know that when U come to someone's area and complain about them, they don't take it well. My fault.
So, in return, I will undoubtedly be criticized as well. Fine. And, from the responses, obviously no one got the point I was trying to make. So, never mind. Carry on your way. I was just trying to help point out something U may not have realized - that this type of behavior turns off new people to the site.
But, forget I said anything...

I think my point, a simple one, was missed - No, I realize conversations drift off on threads. I'm not being a thread Nazi...
But from a gradual progression in my PS90 topic to these:
WELL,'SPORTS-FAN'!!!,,,! YOU CAN ALWAYS EMPLOY THE "hasher-effect"
on the ol' 'BRASS HAMMER'!!!,,,!!!,,,!!!,,,and WE both WIN.
well,ol'-boy!!!,,,I RECKON -SO.
THERE WAS[back in the 60's] in my sister nation of the " ISRAELITES"

but with the 'out-burst' of global "toolin'-up",,,, PLASTIC 'golf-ball' SIZED HAND-GRENADES[3 meter-kill-radius],,,ANYONE???
This doesn't make any sense.
It would be like if there was a thread on another site asking someone's opinion about the XD or M&P, and I just post random posts like "I need to poop" or "the color blue sucks" - something stupid like that.....
Once again, as I said many times before - my original point was missed altogether. Never mind.

Well, I was polite. And, my continued comments are in response to the replies on these 2 threads. I won't bring it to any other threads, and I am only responding to the posts here. I think I have been polite as I can be - and this whole thing started from a simple point I tried to make. It's progressed into what it is because members here didn't take it the way I meant it - and I've been using several replies to be even more polite yet explain my original point as detailed as I possibly can. It wasn't me coming here to "start trouble.
I just saw the large number of members here, but the small number of active members. And, with the way the topics go, I was making a suggestion to you guys - something you may not have realized - that things are very conducive to drawing in members. Instead, all the replies have slowly progressed into personal attacks. That was never my intention.
It wasn't me coming here to "start trouble.
Then why start with all complaints and no compliments. You didn't even try to contribute anything. You didn't even try to fit in; just change us.
Instead, all the replies have slowly progressed into personal attacks.
Some of us peons just call it as we see it. Not a personal attack; just fact.
That was never my intention.
As far as I'm concerned you can start over. I have a fine X-prefix FN bolt action that I dearly love. Its stocked with Circassian Walnut, 7x57 caliber and is superbly accurate.

RIKA you wrote an outstanding post, pointing out why we might not feel kindly disposed toward someone who charged in and started being critical; but then giving him a chance to redeem himself by starting over and talking guns instead of ordering us around. I'm still uncertain of his motives.

Shipwreck, If you figure out Brass Hammer, please enlighten me. I just enjoy his off the wall comments. Keeps me thinking," did I miss something?"
I was new here once too. I don't take offense to a thread I started being 'jacked'. As Rich said, in conversation, the topic can change, roll around, get way way off what it originally was, and come back to the original topic.
I facilitate meetings, and am in several every day. Conversations and discussion goes all over the place, and it is alot of work to keep it narrowed to just the topic. However, in meetings, you have a specific agenda and purpose. Here, we just wish to enjoy conversation with each other and don't really worry to much about the threads being hijacked...

I'm here this final time because I've been getting e-mail updates everytime someone responds to one of my prev threads.
But this one he stated was very nice:

come-back an "vist",,,ya, non-sailin',,,****-HEAD!!!

That was on my PS90 thread. After this was allowed to stand, I've decided not to bother coming back. So, this is my last post, and I'm not going to return because I'm deactivating all the e-mail notices.

Let's see, I am a "**** head" here - and the post stands without being deleted and I'm the guy being attacked here after making a simple suggestion. Damn.
As for my site - I never came here to get into a pissing match or a competition. I never compared my forum to this one. YOU guys did that. But, Go click on the "Top 100" sites banner. I do get more hits than you. Also, our site is younger than this one - hence the less amount of posts.
I am not even sure why I both to come answer these posts. I know you guys will have the next insult posted underneath my message - so what's the point.
I suggested that there is some nonsensical posts here in the middle of threads someone new tries to post here. I suggested that this may bother new people, and I made the suggestion that things be kept SOMEWHAT on topic. I know topics drift - but come'on. Anyway - instead of taking that well - I get attacked.
I have also already stated that I should have been smart enough not to even open my mouth - but I did. But, my original, very first post was not done in malice - however, ever since then, every response from people here have been nothing but a series of personal attacks. Sure, someone will turn it around yet again on the next reply after this message - but that is the honest truth. DO what you want - I really don't care anymore.
I'm not here to compete between forums. I gave a suggestion - members here didn't like it and turned this thread into a whole different animal. This thread just proved my point.
I'll tell U what - Admins - Please delete all the threads I started here - we can be done with this, never mine. It's not worth the headache. No one took my suggestion well, and there is no point in me participating here after all of this ill will. Please just delete all my posts and threads.

For one thing, there were many good points made, about conversations, about how they go, and the feelings of the people here who responded to your attemps to tell us what to do and say.
Perhaps you are afraid that some on your board may come and see the posts you made here; but the fact is, you penned them yourself.
You came on here trying to order us around, and naturally, the strong independent people who hang at this site are not going to be treated like sheeple, not by you or anyone else.
You were given the option to try again and just come talk guns, but you chose to come back with more BS.
Come on, just visit here and talk guns; if you want to complain, you've got your own board.
Shipwreck, having a tantrum won't do you any good here; just suck it up like an adult and admit that you are wrong. You caused the problem with your arrogance - not us. We're quite a friendly bunch as long as nobody craps on the cyber floor of our house. As for deleting your posts, I hope that Admin leaves them up as an example of what not to do when you join a group.

I took a quick peek at your site, just to look at the rules. You can't imagine what I found!!! Here:
The most important aspects about this forum that other FN forums lack are:
A. Freedom of Speech
B. Freedom of Expression
I think you are being a bit of a hypocrite. You have come here to our site, tried to tell us how to post, criticized the unique way some of our members express themselves, and in doing so, violated your own foundation rules.
No wonder you want all of your posts deleted.

shipwreck i'm sorry that the comment made by brasshammer upset you, he could have choisen his words better i will admit. be that as it may i figured i'd let you in on a little secret. brass has a constitional right, called the first amendment to say just about anything he chooses wheather it be in print (ie: the net) or verbaly. that being said, again he could have used some different language. as it appears you can be offended rather easly is seems. i also relize that it takes a modicum of man hood to ignor somethings that mite be a little distastful. also by your replies to the ladies on the this form, you are sorely lacking in backbone, manhood, character, and hell just get a pair beteen your legs man. cowboy up, stand tall and be a man, i uinderstand this may take some work on your part, but it will be well worth the effort in the long run. see apoligies come in all forms don't they.

No, no one has referred to you as a "****-head" and couldn't due to language censors used on most forums, but from what I've seen, it's just Brass Hammers way. I doubt he's too serious about it. So what's the deal??

Good point. When Gunkid was around, he called me c.nt and every other nasty name imaginable. I just laughed and made a joke of his name calling; that made him much more angry than if I had acted offended. Brass hammer has his own way of expressing himself. Shipwreck, sorry you took all this the way you did. Yes, you only made a suggestion, and I tried my best to explain why your ideas about how a message board should be run just are not the same as mine. I'm not saying either of us is right or wrong, just that we are different in our approaches.
But I will say that where I think you went wrong was when you turned your suggestion into what appeared to be a crusade. Instead of just accepting this site "as is" and moving on, you got the natives all riled up. So really, who is at fault for that turn of events? And because of it, you now want to take your ball and bat an go home? So how does that appear? If you can't make the rules then you don't want to play any longer?
All I will say is, I'm sorry you feel that way.....

A good balance is difficult to achieve and considering what AL's been through, its even more surprising we have the cohesion we do.

What's the sense of having one if you are afraid someone will know about it? If someone breaks into their house, are they going to grab a broomstick for self defense because they are afraid that then someone would know about the gun? Do they sneak a look over their shoulder if they look at a gun magazine on the magazine rack?
Sorry, I just don't understand that sort of attitude.
