UFC 79 is happening tonite. Liddell vs. Silva and Hughes vs. St.Pierre

I'm rooting for Liddell and Hughes but both those fights could go either way. St.Pierre beat Hughes pretty bad in their last match, this will be the tie breaker.

UFC = Ultimate Fighting Championship. The first ones started I think in the early 90's with a brazilian jiujitsu artist named Royce or Hoyce (not spelling it right) Gracie winning the first 8 or so in a row. It has evolved quite a bit since then. In fact Gracie was beaten by Hughes recently, either this year or last. Brazilian jiujitsu is still used to win many matches in the UFC. No one is really single minded in their fighting anymore. They all seem to know jiujitsu, muy thai, kung fu or karate, and at least a little boxing. They call it Mixed Martial Arts or MMA.

Ultimate Fighting Championship:

Mixed martial arts in a cage basically. It's come a long way in the last few years. Yes, it's a blood sport, yes it's popular.

When the sport started, there were almost no rules (no eye gouging and no biting). Ju Jitsu ruled the ring. Most fighters were of one camp, or one style. It has since grown into a combination of styles.

Oh yeah, Liddel and Silva was a great fight! Huges/Peirre was a disappointment. Huges was outclassed. Both men have a lot of class.

Hughes couldn't mount any sort of attack at all. Much like the last fight. I can't wait to see GSP and Serra rematch.

GSP has become what I consider an Ultimate fighter. He beat Huges at his own game.

I think Serra caught GSP of gaurd with aggression and a lucky punch, I'd bet it won't happen again.

St. Pierre nailed Hughes when he got careless trying to shoot in low....and the ealier (accidental) groin shot did not help Matt that night.
