BP Wheel Guns

These are two of the many BP Revolvers over the years i acquired. This is my 1858 army remington revolver.44 cal & my 1861 Colt Navy .36 cal. About two weeks ago on another forum a member of that board posted pics of a elk he shot with a model 1858 Remmy Clone that had optics . I thought that looks od but at the same time fascinated that he took a large elk with a cap-n-ball revolver. Anyone know or ever met someone that hunted with a BP Revolver? If I can find the thread ill post it here.:shrugs:

Now for the hunting part nope I've not but a freind I had several years back used a C&B .44, one of the Colt pattern ones but I can't recall the model of which. I do know it was not a Walker though, as that I'd remember.

He would hunt deer with it. I remember he had some work done on the trigger and it was very accurate with the load he worked up.

I broken many of hand & hand springs and had to replace triggers bunch of times. Even had to replace the cylinder locking bolt on a few. I beat the hell out of them fan firing. Its just not the italian models either that break on me. Five years ago i purchased a 2nd generation colt navy and that broke on me and its still apart in the box. Here's a pic of a 1862 sheriff (.36 cal .375 ) i used to practice with until everything got loose on me. . Barrel to brass frame was loose with cylinder slop and stress cracks formed off the back strap screws were back strap attaches to the frame behind the hammer. This revolver lasted me four years..

Those 2nd gen Colts were actually made by Uberti. I have one (2nd gen) that's a Pocket Navy. Nicest BP handgun I've ever seen.

Now the 3rd Gen Colts....IMHO, they were junk. I shot one loose in less than 100 balls. Sent it back to Colt, they peened the slot in the cylinder pin with a hammer and sent it back.

The only things I've ever shot with mine were groundhogs.

I never had any issue with Colt or Uberti fit or finish work. I have had my share of junk. I wish the internal parts were better made. I know i abuse them when fan fired but damn if some don't break in one or two weeks. Good thing for the Dixie parts catalog.... I was just looking at Colts 3rd Gen. SIG series at a shop in Gettysburg and thought they looked decent. $850 for the model i wanted. Robbery!

Don't know the difference, but just called Natchez in Chattanooga TN- wondered why they did list any BP replica wheelguns, like Cabela's- in their sale flyer- they are discontinuing some Colt .31 cals. about $200 from their retail- FYI- I like the .44 Rem 1858-solid frame- ease cylinder change- but if someone is looking for a Colt, might be worth a phone call.

cool thread, and way to long 'shoveled-under',,as I've a .44cal COPY of the remington 1858 revolving 'carbine' [hey, head-shots @75 yards???, NO PROBLEM.]
