It is a garand receiver, mosty springfield armory parts, 308, 16.5" barrel, takes m14 mags, and i found a couple parts that say pb on them. No idea what it is, but was told a british conversion of a garand....dont think so but cannot find any info.
Homebuild? It does shoot well though.

No BM59 anywhere. Looks like springfield and info except s/n was attempted to be removed.. No caliber marking and no import mark. And the gas tube looks like a bent original one, but the way it is bent looks like it was either made that way or professionally done.
gas tube close up. and a disassembled partially pic.

I figured it was probably a home built something or other. At least it shoots well and I dont have too much in it. If I end up keeping it(likely), then I will probably have the whole thing refinished...parked probably.

It could be an US Army modification. One of my friend's dad has a Garand that has a 20 round mag on it. My friends grandfather bought it in the 1950's. Apparently M1's that went out for sale were modified by the Army. Why they did this I dont know. However his mod. Garand had the rifle grenade launcher permanatly welded on to the end of the barrel as well. It was not a "chop down" like yours.

Golden State Arms modified some Garands to be BM 59 rifles for the Border Patrol - I used to have one built in the 1960s. Generally what was done was to buff out everything on the receiver except the serial number.
If you had an M1 to compare the 59 with, it would be real telling. If the receivers were to appear identical AND if the serial numbers on the 59 looked like those on an M1, you pretty much know right away that you're dealing with an M1 remanufacture.
Due to the differences in lengths, modifications may have been done, most notably to the operating rod. Many of the Bm59s are a mismash of BM 59 parts and the Garand that was used to build the weapon up from.
I could tell you a lot more if I saw your weapon.

DAMN, GUYS!, just this morning I was hidin'/slidin' for a early morning hour @MURPHYS GUNSMITHIN' and stumbled 'into' a CABLED-LOCKED BM-59[about$850],,,I almost asked OUT-LOUD!!!,,,"HOW MANY SPARE-MAGS, COMES WITH THIS CLUNKER/PIG",,,as I quickly studied my .308 'stash' of ammo, AND KNEW 'IFFIN' anybody would have said FOUR,OR MORE!,,,I WOULD HAVE 'whipped-out' the debit card AND PUT DOWN $400 ON IT!!!,,,AND WISELY, KEPT MY MOUTH-SHUT![it's called discipline!!!,,,IT COMES WITH AGE/GREY HAIR.]:nyah:
There are a lot of AO's where you could sell that $850 'pig' for $1200 - $1500+ to a collector/shooter. A genuine Italian modded one is rare.

I got rid of it quite awhile back. I had between $500 and 600 in it, and I traded for basically 3 cases of unopened portugese 308....which I sold for about $1500.
I liked it, but not enough to keep it.
Now I'm looking for a good long range rifle.
