I'm curious as to what folks would do, given no laws as a limitation.
In a bid to be fair, I offered several solutions Liberals have offered up on radio talks shows regarding self defense.

I went with option #1. Turnabout is fair play, you know.

Call the police, challenge verbally, & if he doesn't surrender promptly, I'll have to figure out the best way to clean my carpet.

You know, since the feds can confiscate material related to the commission of a crime via forfeiture laws, I really don't see why the same turn of events couldn't be used as a deterrent in other situations such as breakins. Someone attempts to break into your home to steal you blind or possibly injure or kill you, well, if they lose that bet, they lose the farm as well. Lose EVERYTHING they have AND get thrown into jail upon conviction.
Now THAT would certainly give someone pause before attempting such a crime.........
But I guess it is too sensible to expect it to become a law. I guess the feds would rather be the ones doing the confiscating anyway. So if there is any forfeiture involved, it would go to them.

i'd do the same with a few exceptions.
1. i wouldn't call the police.
2. i wouldn't challenge verbally.
3. i would kill him.
4. i would bury him in the back 40.
5. wait for the next one.
6. do the same.
7. i have tile floors, no carpet to clean.
8. have to fix the sheet rock and re-paint though.
9. try and remember where the last one was buried don't need to dig up old memories.
10. have a nice day.

there is that thing called 'intent', 'ability',and 'opportunity'[ALL COVERED in a HOME INVASION],,,then, a #911 phone call,,,AS THE DEAD BASTARDS START TO 'stiff',,,then a REQUEST for a lawyer!!!
NO-MORE/NO-LESS.
although,I tend to swing with MR. B RUBBLES/GREEN ACRES PLAN.

Rich, I've been saying that for years as an appropriate way to deal with thieves. Add to that, I advocate indentured servitude. Sentence the SOB to be the would be victim's slave for 10 years. Cuffs and leg irons mandatory, ball and chain optional. I think I would have to go for the option.

Gentlemen---Someone I know very well, upon finding the man who beat his eight year old son with a 2x4, took the man into the West Texas desert, belly shot him with a .22, gently staked him belly up, poured honey over him and left him to the ants and scorpions.
We never looked back.

If someone is brazen enough to enter my property, much less my home, without invitation or good, peaceful reason then they are a threat to me and mine. I have no qualms whatsoever about bringing all available force to bear. Understand that when I say that, I mean that if I had tactical nuclear weapons at my disposal they would be on the table as an option. In reality, I would hate to spend a $.25 round on a stinkin' thief, but I would spend it and probably several of its brothers too.

I like something between 1 and 2, I mean cash would be nice to compensate for cost of ammo, cleaning the gun, what ever mess gets made,,, cash,,
Fact is, if it was legal to do whatever, crook would not be at the door in the first place, the day the laws say we can't harm them is the day crime will go knuts.
And I will need a bigger trash can.

Think of it as another variant on the three S's:"Shoot(or stomp&Stab!),Shovel and Shut UP!"Hey , if it works for ranchers then I see no reason why urban working poor such as myself can't repel hostile boarders in a similar fashion...which gets me thinking on th esubject of the Somali pirate situation ( imminent thread drift alert!)...why the hell sdid the shipping companies EVER agree that their crews had to be legally bound as "gutless and nutless"?In this day and age I CAN'T believe that an arms locker is NOT standard crew equipment for any sea-going vessel.( Yeah . I know, the lawyers would squeal).

Anywhere in the world, if you fire on armed forces/LE, they are going to shoot back. Why should it be any different for the average citizen or the civilian ship on the high seas? There is a reason that pirates attack shipping vessels rather than a carrier group.

My son is Chief Mate for Matson lines on a large container ship (US registery). Since 9-11 they have had an arms locker and know how to use it I asked what was in it. He would not (was not permitted to) tell me.

Whatever is in it, it ain't enough. An adequate armory to my way of thinking aboard a ship at sea includes a couple of twin or quad .50's fore and aft as well as a set of quads amidships on either side in addition to individual weapons for use repelling boarders. That is a minimum of course. A few shoulder fired missles might not go amiss either. The best way to not get boarded is to not let the boarders within reach of the ship.
Yes, I do advocate blowing them out of the water. In the oldest of naval tradition, no quarter is given and none expected.

Cutter---I told you he couldn't tell me (wink and nod), but let me assure you that pirates would have less chance of capturing that ship than the CDFF would have of defeating a squad of grunts out of Basic.
