I am horribly out of shape...however, I stirred my substantial ass into action this week and split wood and did some of what I'll call 'martial arts'.
I have some ass behind my swing. I am certain that if I hit someone with a martial arts implement I'd break that person or beat him down. I also know that a fight needs to end quick when I have short wind, and all fights should end quick, but man, it's nice to have some ass behind those strikes and throws.

Survive'n'Thrive;block off an hour each day no matter what.Cardio should include both sustained distance and explosive (sprintervals) movements.I prefer the outdoors;but I will suffer thru machin ecardio when th einjuries bug me.
The rest of the hour 'a day should be split between strength and flexibility. It can be ANY kind of resistance ;whether por not it includes iron work ;or just hardcore body weight intervals.WHAT works for YOU is less important than whether or not you stay with it.
Diet is important-that said do NOT starve yourself.Take in clean fuel;focus on REAL food as opposed to pre-packaged. Protein supplements are good as an addition(especially after training) but think more along the lines of green and red veggies;lean meat and fish and whole grains.
Stimulants like caffieneare useful;but do NOT become overly reliant on them. In th ewinter I like my Italian Roast;the summer my Black Irish tea;green teas year round. That said I consume the minimum necessary to preserve tolerance.
I can reccommend the website "Lockflow.com";at the top of th epage hit techniques-lots of work out drills are there.
Train hard ,but train sensibly;if you deadline yourself from overtraining -that is a step backwards.the whole point is to gradually raise your body's abilities ;not to sideline them.
Most important?? HAVE FUN ,DAMMIT!!:D

BTW; I took the Middlesex County Sherrif's PT test this past Saturday ( after a sleep deprived night at work!)...they thought I was a "ringer" for my age division. Apparently I scared the kids ( under 30 sorts) who took and / or graded the test):D
