since the latter sufficed for some REALLY tough men in the 1800's, using a lfp that wasted 1/3rd of its 650 ft lbs on overpenetration, I don't feel at all bad about "only" having 430 ft lbs left at 200m.

Contrary to what many IGNORANT people claim, the 11.5" 223 gets Winchester white box 55 gr ball to over 2600 fps, and that stuff is the 48,000 CUP SAAMI 223 spec, NOT the 55,000 NATO spec 5.56. :) Add another 13% of pressure, and the 11.5" 223 will get another 300 fps. It will get 60 gr sp's to 2800 fps, too. But let's just say 2700 fps. Say the 60 gr V max has a .270 BC. Speer's long range tables say that it will still have 2060 fps left at 200 yds, say 2000 fps at 220 yds,(200m) 430 ft lbs. Would you rather have a failure to stop at 50m,or 200m, hmm? :)

At 50 m, such a 223 load has 2600 fps, 900 ft lbs. Same as a 6" 44 mag revolver has a the muzzle, with the HOTTEST 240 gr factory loads. :) WHICH load will have its bullet STOP in the man, and which will wasted HALF of its power on overpenetration, hmm? Which load has the ability to destroy chest organs with just its temporary cavity and bullet frags, hmm? 223 sp to chest, at such a range, with such a load, will drop you lack a sack of rocks49x out of 50. The 1 in 50 times it won't, a 12 ga slug wouldn't have done so either. There's always a few RARE flukes.
