at 100 yds, neither ran more than 100 yds, one only about 50 yds. 30-30 sp's usually do no better. 308 ball is unlikely to do much better,if any. Big dogs are sometimes able to run off with chest hits from 308 ball. With good softpoint handloads in shorty 223, deer rarely make it more than 50 yds, given a hit thru both lungs.
