and will take the latter, too, MESSILY and slowly, with special ammo. All you really have to do to CAUSE the death of an elephant is put half a dozen holes IN one lung. I did NOT say shoot CLEAN THRU that lung, dumbass. With a solid bronze, hollowbased round nosed bullet, 90 grs at 2300 fps or so in the CAR, penetration of 15+" of flesh is guaranteed. The lung is a target about 2 FEET SQUARE. That AINT hard to hit a BUNCH of times, in 1-2 seconds, from 50 ft and less, even on an animal that's in full flight. 5-6 hits in that circle, 3-4 bullets MISS those rib bones, and there you go. The animal is coughing up blood from one lung, aspirating it into the other lung, so it dies within a few hours.
HAVING to take an elephant is a great rarity, even for a survivalist in the parts of Africa where those beasts are commonplace. The 223 can easily brain any lesser animal, so there's really ZERO reason to believe that you need MORE power than the 223, for ANYTHING, really. All othershtf rifle choices require you to give up the silencer, .22 unit, concealment, GI rd, mags, parts, drop in luminous sights, one hand use, etc. So they are bad choices for shtf, period.
