The M16 is a glorified varmint rifle, nad has no business on the front lines. Even with a larger calibre (such as its predecessor, the AR10), the M16 has the fatal reliability flaw associated with direct gas operation. In good conditions, with quality ammo, this is a mute point. In combat situations, and with ammo made by the lowest bidder, it tends to make a difference.
BTW: THe only AR15 variant using a gas-op rod (I can think of) is made by HK.
