sheesh, that's about 50% more power than the rifles with which Bell took many hundreds of huge elephants. u "think' it's inadaquate for US game? sheehs, only Alaska and Montana have grizzlies, most of which are under 500 lbs. Almost no black bears are bigger than that, and hundreds of elk fall to 30-30 type rds, muzzleloaders, bows, pistols ,etc, every year. 308 milsurp offers lots of practice at about 15c a shot, so why bother with anything else, hmm? Sheesh people are stupid.

If I have to face charging cape buffalo I want at least a .375 H&H Magnum and a .416 Rigby or a .506 Gibbs would be nice.

For North American game, yeah .308 can do it. The Hornady Light Magnums put the .308 in the class of standard commercially loaded .30-06. With the heavier bullets (180 or 200 grain), it CAN kill the largest game on the continent, IF placed right. However keep in mind that the Light Magnums should not be used with most autoloaders. The FAL's adjustable gas system can compensate, I don't know if the M1A's self-adjusting system can compensate enough or not.

For Africa, .308 is not enough gun, and it has little to do with FPe.

I think an op rod replacement(among other things) would be prudent before cycling such loadings through an M14/M1A type rifle.I'd even be careful in using them in FAL pattern rifles (although the Israeli HB variant with the heavier bolt carrier group lokks stout enought.)
Hey, If we're talking .308 pushed hard and hot,,anyone know what the old Ohio ordinance 1918 type BAR semi's could hach them?Considering it was conceived as an '06, and later offered in other calibers THAT might be your .308 dinosaur killer..... or at least a lot of fun with the warmer loadings....

You wouldn't have to worry about it in the FN FAL. Thats where the adjustable gas system comes into play. You can adjust the amount of gas to function the action. This actually minimizes wear and tear on the rifle. For North America the .308 diameter bullet is more than enough for the game you will encounter.
