lfp, zero expansion, 700 ft lbs, with at least 200 of them wasted on overpenetration. A good, 5" barreled 9mm beats that level of shock and tissue penetration rather easily, if it's loaded right. 55 gr, 3 segment pre-frag bullet, 2300 fps, using the 356 TSW case. Any 9x19 can have its chamber deepened for the .100" longer case of the 356. It's straightwalled, and rated as being safe at 45,000 CUP. 55 grs at 2300 is 650 ft lbs. THREE wound tracks, and no overpenetration at all.

they were using the technology they had

but it's obvious that we can do FAR better, today. A 223 softpoint makes the 44-40 look sick, by comparison, in every way, both on deer and against men.
