the chamber has to be deepened, to take the longer case of the Rowland. Search for Clark Custom Guns, and then for 460 on their site. It is 35,000 CUP, not the 21,000 CUP of "Plus P" .45 ACP, so you can load it really hot, altho only in fully supported barrels. It makes the most sense in a lw commander, really. Better yet, a defender length slide, muzzle wt on a Commander barrel. Split Nose is a cast bullet, hollowpointed and hollowbased in a lathe, made of "non lead" solder, which is 95% tin, 5% antimony. Use such to cast the 155 gr Lee swc .45 bullet, and it drops from the mold at 100 grs. A centerdrill in the tailstock, simple mandrel-holder for the headstock (made of "slit' aluminum) let you hb and hp the bullets without marring them. Deepen the grease groove, slit the nose almost back to the grease groove. at impact, you get 3 segments, the rearmost one being a full-wadcutter shape, nose heavy, because of the big hollowbase. 70 grs is .45 wt, 2300 fps is the velocity from a 4" barrel, 13-13.5 grs of Bullseye is the charge.
For big animals, or more penetration, I favor having the spare mag loaded with 90 gr swc version of the above bullet. It's also hollowbased, to help penetration and accuracy, but not as wide or as deep as the 70 gr version.
All of the data, which in my opinion only begs one question. Why, What is the overall benifit to all of the mods, does a .45ACP interchange in a converted barrell, and How much more performance do You get compared to say a Aguila IQ slug. I am just asking so lets all stay civil.
Interesting but I don't think there are any degrees of dead; either you are or you aren't. IMO bullet placement and keeping presence of mind is much more important. Not to mention the general unavailability of the round. I'll keep the 45ACP, thank you.
u people r just plain ignorant. It aint ABOUT lethality, .22's kill. It's about the probability of an INSTANT incapacitation. 230 gr .45's are VERY lacking in shock effect, and ONLY shock has a chance at causing and instant stop. Yes, a simple barrel swap means you can shoot .45 ACP. In fact, you can fire ACP in the Rowland barrel, with a fair amount of reliability, and no safety issues, because the extractor holds the case against the breechface enough for the primer to be detonated. you may "think' that tranferring a pathetic 250 ft lbs to the torso is the same thing as transferring 800 ft lbs, having 3 separate wound tracks, having AP capability, and having Mach II velocity causing the temporary cavities (3 of them, overlapping) to be able to destroy fragile chest organs, but you are wrong, and animal tests readily prove that. The 230 gr jhp's rarely expand much,if any, in flesh, so the jhp exits the torso, wasting 1/3rd or more of its 350 ft lbs of energy.
I dont really care what a bunch of lames "think" about any issue at all.
Why must we be "Ignorant" when its your custom reload?, and not something we can even buy a mold for let alone duplicate without your instructions? I dont see were the results, which may or may not be as advertised. One other point is the manufacture specifys the longer csae length for safety what you recomend is similar to running full bore .357 reloads through a .38 spcl.. Not recomended over a period of time, may not go BOOM today but one of these days, POW.
So who says you have to practice a lot with that load? It recoils EXACTLY like .45 ACP ball does. You don't even understand BASIC math and physics. Multply the bullet wt in grs, times the velocity in fps, for both 230 grs x 800 fps and 80 grs at 2300 fps, and it comes out IDENTICAL. The 460 load takes about 8 grs more powder to get the 2300 fps speed than the .45 takes to get 230 grs to 800 fps. So at least some of that extra powder has to be considered to be "ejecta" for the purposes of calculating recoil. So, it's still just 78 grs x 2300, and the shorter bullet has less friction in the bore, less inertia to overcome. The longer case and the big hollowbase make for a lot more powder space than is left in the .45 case, using a 230 gr bullet, too. Who says you can't get the mold?
