why would anyone care? I could walk to chicago, walk BACK with a chainsaw, and STILL get more work done in a season with that saw than anyone can with an axe. The damned things are dangerous and inefficient as hell. Even a hand-saw makes them look sick by comparison, because you work much less to cut nearly anything, and a nail, knot, frozen wood, a twig behind you that you didn't see, etc, won't result in a broken saw or your leg or foot's having a major gash in it.

Probably the DOT builds and maintains the roads in the current national (federal) forests.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me,except that I would have thought that road builders would use something faster than an ax.Like a bulldozer mebee.

You would be surprised how much Forestry Service trail and road works gets done with "pioneer tools", the Forestry Service also maintains a huge ramada of pack and saddle horses along with quite a few llamas. Thier publications concerning packing are as deatailed as the ax work imformation. The FS maintains thousands of miles of backcountry trails that the only way in is on horseback anf the only power avaliable is people power.
You know, hey hire thousands of seasonal workers every year for that sort of thing and have many Conservation Core style work camps ect. You see lots of high school and colledge kids on the trail crews.
