"look's like crushed beer cans and Orange crate, shoot's like Star Wars." I was talking to a guy who was buying some 7.62X39MM at a chain sporting good's store and I mentioned I had a couple AK's and SKS's and we got into a good discussion about the AK's. He had more than a few and liked the WASR a lot and liked the Chinese AKS better. He told me that he had a Chinese import that had better than 40,000 rounds through it. He said he once fired it for a whole year without cleaning or lubing it. He guessed 2 to 3 thousand rounds worth. He admitted he could not do very well with it past 350 yards, but under that, with the original sights he could ring a steel target every time. He had a WASR set up with a 'scope that would do it at 600 yards. My own feeling is that I prefer the Colt AR hands down, but I wouldn't feel too bad with my AK or MAK 90.

I have a mak90 that is really better than it should be. Paid $159 for it in 1991 or 1992, and can't remember a problem or failure with it. Trigger kind of sucks, but no worse than a lot of defensive pistols sold nowadays.

The best of the Chicom stamped AKs have something in common with both the Zastava and VEPR builds: 1.5-1.6 mm stamped receiver,an RPK type bulged front trunnion and a decent barrel.
All the rest? Trigger, rear sights etc;can be retrofitted relatively easily these days.
Even the lowly WASR 10 seems to have had a knife party go down with their QA at Cugir-fewer monkey builds get out. Still gotta do the 922 compliant import thingy, but to me at least;that makes Draco's and M92 s a better than expected deal.

when they win some matches, become able to take 300 yd crows with ease, have a .22lr unit, fire the ammo in the military arsenals, take a solid scope mount, have drop in luminous sights, drop in trigger jobs, etc, I'll think they're ok. Until then, they aint.

What experience do you have with the AK system? Have you ever owned or shot one? Not everything needs a .22 unit to be a valid combat weapon. If a .22 unit was the answer to all needs, why not just buy a Ruger 10/22 and some 25 round magazines? Why bother with .223, 7.62 X51, or 7.62X39 ?

IIRC,there were a few Center .22 conversion units for AKs.. primarily for the 5.56 and 5.45 variants, but I DO recall a few meant for 7.62x39 barrels... I remember them coming with a barrel insert. How well they worked,I have no knowledge of.
I DO know, that given my choice of origin/build/model; there's more than a few AK variants-some of which I either own or have owned and have extensive experience with-thats I'd have NO reservations on using at the sharp end of things.
At some level, its all about preference. It's like the Black Belt Factory grad that picks a fight with an old leg breaker because, according to him;" My Art Is Best".. ...and wakes up (if lucky)at the ER wondering how he managed to have sustained bone breaks in so many places.

if you dont care about having a spongy trigger and get an ambi safety, so you dont have to shift your firing grip to manipulate the safety and if you want to pay more for scope mount, luminous sights, etc, you can have a less accurate, heavier gun. but why bother with all of that?

you get a rifle that wont shoot our GI rd, uses heavy ammo (or has no .22lr unit) the .22 unit for the .30 AK is a pita, requiring a barrel liner. So what do you get back, in return for giving up all the advantages of the AR?

You're not listening - what's the problem with owning an AR and an AK? Why does it get you so worked up that somebody would do own more than one rifle, one pair of shoes, or one of (fill in the blank)?

In today's America, I think it's a mistake to NOT own an AR. But you seem to think it's a mistake to own anything in addition to an AR.

Because it's a really cool gun that's fun to shoot. Why would it need the G.I. round? Why would it need a .22 unit? I didn't buy it to shoot .22's out of.

On the .22 thing, I can see the utility of it. I have a .22 conversion kit for mine, as well as a .22 conversion kit on one of my 1911's. It's fun and it's cheap to shoot.

But on the "GI round" thing, I've never understood JMD's premise there. I know why I want the GI round; because I like to have thousands of rounds of ammunition, bought cheap. But the simultaneous contentions of "gotta have the GI round" and "84 rounds is all you need for shtf" seem to cancel each other out.

There are plenty of optics mounts for AK's these days .it's not like the left side base with the PSO type mount/scope combination or the Kobras of days past were useless.
Now you have dogleg mounts that also give you newer rear sight aperture options(longer radius,Ghost Ring etc).
I REALLY never felt handicapped going stock(assuming a decent base rifle).
Again, the only things I ever felt the inclination to tinker with or replace are easy fixes(trigger/retaining plate vs a Shepherds Crook, rear sight etc).
And then you run a bone stock AK(either a high end Arsenal or a lowly Zastava M70/92 or WASR/SAR/Draco that ,for some inexplicable reason; just plain shoots well.
WTF-they keep the M4geries/AR's company. And,I like both.

but you can't CARRY both, and the AK's don't shoot GI ammo or have a decent .22 unit. Not good and what do you get in return for these losses? Nothing.

You never answered my simple, civil question above:
