Some people call it a 'Mouse Gun'. That sure looks like a pretty darn big mouse.

The bullet was evidently a .224" 77gr OTM.

The Bear was shot at 40 yards 2 times in the shoulder ran about 25 yards and was grave yard dead. I'm estimating the bear weighed about 250+ lbs. I saw 5 bears today I waited until I had a good shot it is very brushy in good ol Idaho where I hunted today. The bullet did very nice work of the lungs.

I'm keeping this pic. The next time some fool tells me that "you can't hunt with an assault rifle" I'm going to glue it to a 2x4 and beat them with it!

Thanks!

The .223 is effective round. I am surprised that he managed to penetrate the shoulder and hit the lungs, but maybe he wasn't hitting through the bone. However, it looks like he waited for good shot placement, which is key. I use the .223 as my primary coyote round. It would not be my first choice for bear - but that's personal prefference more than anything.

For example, using my .338, I would have more options of where I could reliably shoot.

Using my .308, I would still have more options than the .223, though not as many as with the .338.

My point is, any round can be effective if used within it's limitations and with proper shot placement. (This was not meant to put the .223 down in any way.)

I also see that he was not using an unusually short barreled weapon...

Good post, interesting read.

The .223 is my favorite rifle cartridge, but not what I would pick for black bear. Sure it will kill one, but I think you are taking a big chance on wounding one and having it escape to die somewhere in agony. IMHO, the .30 caliber rifles are a better choice.

250lb bear with a 5.56 that was not engraged, not excited, not even alarmed. I can see that. I've killed a few deer with a bolt 5.56. And I have heard of brown bear being killed with 9mm High powers (after many many shots!)

So, does that make a 5.56 'the' weapon to stop a charging grizzly that weighs 800 lb? If I had to use an assault rifle to stop a grizzly I would prefer the AK hands down. That's the 7.62x39 in just about any AK format.

Allowing any animal that has the potential to kill you within 25 yds, is stupid plain and simple. If the balloon ever goes up, those that think that they are going to use it as an opportunity to get an adrenilan rush, are idiots. There is no other possible explanation. If you have to engage an animal that wants to kill you, is best done at the maximum range possible.

The 25 yards may have also included 12 feet up in a stand giving some more to the safety factor.

As for using a .223 to hunt bear, well I can kill a black bear with a .22LR - take my word for it. That does not make a .22LR a good bear round. A .223 is a reliable varmint round at best.

I suppose I shouldn't mention that time I tried to lasso a small (3-4') alligator..., nor the time I was going to try to spear a hog.

BIG varmints, and it will take deer just fine, if used intelligently and with proper ammo, to 150m. It will brain big critters just fine, at whatever range you can reliably hit a 4" circle, under field conditions, too.*********************************

Ok, now according to gunkid/erika the 5.56mm is only good to 150meters! What happened to the 500 meters bs?

There's that lack of self-control again.

Wylycoyote, did you get the pig? Hog hunting with spears is something everyone should do once. :dgrin:
Actually, its still on the agenda. We were on an island in the Tensas Delta a few years back on a survival exercise. I was all for trying to bag a hog with a spear, but the hogs had moved off the island we were on after stripping it of browse not long before we had arrived. There was sign everywhere, but no pigs.

A friend of mine went hog hunting earlier this year in Oklahoma and got one, though. I believe he used a Cold Steel boar spear on a 6 foot shaft. A pack of dogs ran the boar down and kept it busy until he could get the point into it.

A dad of one of my friend's got a wild boar with a lance/spear back when I was in my teens. All the guy could do for weeks was talk about how his dad had done it. Chased it down on horseback, dogs cornered it as I recall, and he dismounted and speared it from the ground. My only regret was that I never heard the story directly from my friend's old man, if only because it would have been more detailed coming from the source. Me thinks that takes testerone.
