Garand, I never met him, but I wish that I had. He was probably the single greatest designer of cannon and large caliber ordnance.

His brilliance was in his ability to intuitively design. He knew in his head pretty much what the finished product should be, before he ever calculated.

Everyone should watch 'Canadian Bacon' at least once. It's probably the funniest movie John Candy ever made.

Alan Alda plays a US president who's falling in the polls so he needs to distract the America public. So, he tries to instigate a war - with Canada (they are close and convenient). They call it 'A Line in the Snow'.

At one point the ultra-patriotic American milita guys, whipped into a frenzy by the news and the President's rhetoric, are on their own private raid into Canada, in a stolen Canadian garbage truck that they spray painted in anti-Canadian graffiti, when a Canadian cop (Dan Ackroyd) pulls them over. They are sweating bullets, but he simply writes them a ticket for having their graffiti only in English and not bilingual in French as the law requires.

I did meet Bull many years ago pn Project Harp which used a smppthnored 16 inch 50 caliber naval gun tp fire projectiles weoghong a few hundred pounds at extremely high velocities. Bull was a brilliant man who was almost obssesed with nuilding super guns.

Yeah, he was. Many people seem to forget that. Before he invaded Kuwait, he even asked the US ambassador what the US would do if he did that, and the US ambassador said, "That's your business."

I remember the statement from a US official in Iraq during the 1980's, "With all of the gear we've supplied these guys with, they should be directing traffic in Tehran by now."
