or I'd make the new cap and ball in .;30 bore. I've HEARD of a new, legal for felons black powder substitute (not Pyrodex) that offers 3000 fps, but have yet to check it out. If it exists, I'll offer the .30 cal someday soon.

Don't know why this thread was started in the big bore section, but I see all kinds of hollow point projectiles being sold for the black powder hunters.

I'm not a black powder guy, but I suspect they sell these Hollow points because, yes, they do expand. And yes, there is a market for them.

I doubt the validity of the original statement, but whether it will or not, doesn't make much difference to me. I've found that a WFN cast bullet combines deep penetration with a lot of tissue moved out of the way to produce a more'n satisfactory wound channel.

Now, thinking back a bit, I've loaded .45-70 HPs with 70 grains of FFG that expanded nicely on boar. That was a LONG time ago.

The .45-70 isn't the black powder rifle that andy was speaking of.. I am sure he was speaking of the muzzle loaders,... that push the pure lead out at such a slow speed that the animals can do some matrix moves and avoid being hit..
If a 45 ACP bullet expands,... I am pretty sure that a hollowpoint muzzle loader bullet will expand also... Most jacketed bullets are soft lead, and most muzzle loader bullets, are also soft lead...
Now it probably won't expand at 500 yards, and that may be what he is referring to...
Come on guys, give him some credit.... Every bullet when fired will not expand at some point if it does not hit something prior to that point:headbang:...

You're reading too much into his posts, we may be reading too little.

If that is what he meant, he should have said so. But then the premise of BP out to 500yds may be faulty.

But then again, he started a thread about a BP round as effective as a .308 (of course he also had something about 200 yds in the title - so does that mean he thinks the .308 is only good to 200 yds, or he has a BP round that is as good as a .308 to 200yds? - To me, either way his premise is probably wrong.)

inline b/p rifles use pistol bullets so depending on the range you hitting your target at it could expand or not.

Technology has changed since Andy's days. HPs in BP guns work and work well.
