Way, way, way back, maybe 25 years ago, I had a butt pack kit fully set up. Starting with the normal 782 or ALICE gear which included your Y or H harness, web belt, compass pouch, 1st Aid Compress pouch (Marine box in my case, early on), Canteen pouches, with two canteens, canteen cup, magazine pouches, Ka Bar, US Airforce Survival Knife or M7 bayonet, and butt pack.

Gloves, black with green wool liners hung off a carabiner. A poncho and sometimes poncho liner hung off the butt pack, sleep shirt, extra socks, can of chili, vienna sausages, and granola bars in the butt pack, and a bunch of fire starting stuff, wire saw, and somewhere a folding knife pretty much completed the kit.

Ever have one of these set ups?

One irony is now that I have the money and ability to make the perfect kit and update it, and make it in black, woodland, Olive Drab, ACU, whatever, I don't need them, but they were good to have...so I have the components and for the heck of it, set them up for my sons and whoever needs them.

I've used the ols style ones and the Enchanced or MOLLE ones about the same way.

I've always liked the H-harness over the Y ones though. Because you get the option of more attachemnt point if you rig it right for a 2nd butt back or a sleeping bag.

- I have rifle magazine pouches for double mags in 7.62mm NATO (currently on webbing), double mag pouches in 5.56mm, & 2 double en bloc clip pouches for the M1 Garand changing them to suit the appropriate rifle is less than 10 minutes work;
-the 2 double “en bloc” pouches can also hold 40 rds of .303 on stripper clips;
-additional "en block" clips (5) or .303 stripper clips (10) would be carried in British
5.56mm bandoleers, nylon with a closable snap;
- For the M1A, a Blackhawk 2 Mag thigh pouch is available;
- For the AR 15A2, a Blackhawk 3 mag thigh pouch is available
- Holster used is the US M7 holster in which I carried a handgun on duty while in the Military while overseas and in the field.

Started my military career in the end of the 80s when all of this stuff was still current issue and you could buy the same stuff in the surplus stores for dimes. So I had a field set of gear and an inspection set that lived in my locker. When the Army went digital and we got the new stuff that you couldn't buy spares of without shelling out a lot of dough for, the old inspection set came home to live with me and I turned in the beat up field set.
I've been out for a few years bow and I guess after ten years the ACU pattern stuff is pretty cheap on the surplus market for guys who might want a second set for inspections like I used to do.

My old woodland LBE stuff is still packed and ready to go as part of any bug out scenario, along with a couple of duffels worth of other gear that's pre-loaded and ready to be tossed in the car if I have to do a hasty evacuation for whatever reason ( thinking here of those folks in Canada who had to do a hasty evacuation and wound up taking weird stuff with them because they only had minutes to pick and choose what to take )

Then you're more into INCH bag sizing rather than a BOB-sized bag
