Scoped, canned 223, can brain them at 100m, braced firing position. 4x as likely to get within 100m as inside 25m. Repeat hit speed is there, too, if a bad hit 'only" knocks him down, tears off lower jaw, glances off skull, etc. Immediately put one or more into his chest as he lays there, if need meat badly, or the animal is dangerous. If at all possible, fire from some spot where the bear can't reach you, and you get to fire repeatedly down into his face-mouth. Simple, really. How many times you THINK you will have to deal with a bear? Sheesh. We have a bear that tears open our garbage AT LEAST once a week, for 2 years now, and I"ve seen her ONCE, with a flashlight, as she fled.

You keep returning to this subject. Agreed that you can kill a dangerous animal with a 223. Question is, will it kill you before it gets finished dying. I like taking chances ... but not foolish chances.

Depends on what you're hunting.

The CAR-15 is not a bad weapon for killing a huge variety of game, it's just that your 11.5" barrel is an inferior choice.

Yeah, of course I can kill with a bow a lot further out than that. I can also get that close with a .45-70, which is way ahead of any .22. So what's the point? The rifle you use doesn't determine how close you can get.
