I think this forum is the "forum formorly known as Class 3" so here goes.

Had a conversation with a fellow here at work today. He said that ownership of ANY class 3 firearm allows the Feds to come at anytime 24/7 to check that you still have it/them, to see how it/they are stored, etc. Is this true or just typical BS?

I don't know the answer to that one about the fed laws.

But when I lived in Maryland in the late 80s, I was interested in maybe buying a full-auto gun of some sort. I checked into the state laws and had to read the passage that caught my eye a half dozen times. That passage said that although it was legal to have a full automatic firearm in your possession, it was ILLEGAL to have such a firearm in the immediate vicinity of ammunition or fired casings for this firearm.

The next time I went into one of the local gun shows (Valley Gun Shop - for you guys from Maryland), I asked one of the guys there about it. He said that this was accurate and was actually the law in the state, but said it was never enforced. Well, that killed my idea of buying a full auto, simply because I could have been prosecuted any time at all the local authorities wanted to. Certainly I wasn't going to have a full auto and NOT shoot it!

Since moving to Florida, I can't say I have had much interest in full autos. Price is one hindrance, of course. But I think if I could get ANY full auto, it would have to be a Steyr AUG. That gun would have to be a LOT of fun in full auto!

as far as federal law goes, i believe that the government reserves the right to search and siezure of private property if it believes that the person(s) who own the property in question are the possible perpatraitors of certain crimes deemed to be censurable only at that high a level of government. treason, espianage, terrorism, and so on i think. sounds pretty vague to me.

Haha! RickZ you must play Counter-Strike too! That game is loads of fun and has a Steyer Aug that can be devastating when playing against human opponenents. Well, if you've never heard about the game the AK, Colt, Steyer Aug and MP5 are all the rage among internet gamers who mainly only dream about buying a gun.

G-lock I think you may be correct. Seemes to me that i read that on the atf web page. Check that page out, it has lots of good inf.

Darn, I was just at the mall and picked up a game. Might have to go back for that one. I missed this message earlier.

I've always said that if I ever had a hankering for a full auto, the Steyr AUG would be the one I would want.

You know, they make the Beta-C mags for this gun (or at least you used to be able to get the towers to convert the M16 models), but darned if I can figure out how you would ever hold a Steyr AUG with a Beta-C mag in it.

If it is registered you can bet they will show up any time they feel like it, "if they suspect you of any wrong doing".

But as mentioned above, the best way to find out that type of info is to contact you local ATF office, or check out ATF's website.

since full auto's just a joke, anyway

best stick to the .22's, like Norrel's 1022 Ruger, with his cyclic rate reduced, preferafly silenced, with subsonic ammo. It sounds like you are using an air nozzle.

A .22 unit in an AR can be had in this format, too, of course, and offers a somewhat useful "extra" in case of shtf. It's pretty easy to tote along 1000 rds of .22lr, at 135 rds to the lb. Short bursts, at 15 rds to the second, make a pretty effective item out of a .22 autorifle, from ambush, at least. Especially in thick cover or at night.

Over HALF of the ammo made and imported here, every year, is .22 rimfire. that DOES include the shotshells, too. So you are far more likely to be able to replace .22lr's than any other round, either by barter, or from the dead, or from abandoned homes, stores, etc.

I talked to a class 3 owner/shooter. He said he can't really have any fun with it because when some "busybody" hears a full auto, the Feds are swarming the area looking for that gun the next day! This is in Ohio. I heard a full-auto being shot near McArthur, Oh. and the next day there were a hundred agents trying to find it. Found out later that it was an unregistered (or maybe "hot") Tommy gun. Don't want nothing to do with a stolen gun! I had an excellent Russian Makarov stolen and am STILL mad!

Class 3 dealers also known as a FFL/SOT can have their licensed premises searched with notice. A non FFL class 3 owner can not be searched out of the blue and is still protected under the 4th amendment.

It's total BS. This is a myth started by a couple of idiot ATF agents back in the late 80's when they were trying to make a name for themselves. They illegally used the registry to create a list of suspects to harass. Fortunately, they ran across one person who was a very powerful attorney who spanked them hard on the issue and that BS stopped.

The BATF has since not reputed the claim in an effort to discourage potential NFA firearms owners.

Now, with that being said, they can ask to view your paperwork but they must call, make an appointment and IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE AT YOUR RESIDENCE! The appointment must be at your convienence and cannot be intrusive beyond a specific item or set of items you may possess. Also, they cannot perform spot checks, it has to be relating to a specific incident or problem... they can't go fishing.

The BATF has recently tried some intimidation tactics on people but thankfully, it has backfired on them... in one case, very hard.

I know of one person that is about to open up a monster size depot of whup ass on the BATF in court over their BS. This case will most likely end the careers of some very ignorant and unqualified BATF people that have needed to go for a long time.

If the BATF does give you any problems... take it to your Senator or Congressman... That does help.
