Not only that, but MOST of those 50 million have FAMILIES, pay taxes, social security. so you LOSE the 5-10 k a year that they PAY into the system, and THEN their families start DRAWING 10k$ a year. There's 150 mill in work force, so now 100mill more have to cough up 15k$ more apiece, EACH year, to pay for the 50 million more locked up. LOL. that's IF the courts, cops, etc, COULD actually handle having 100x as much "bizness". The tent city amounts to more than savings. Prison isn't supposed to be pleasant, Melvin. You don't need TV, a weight room, law library or internet connect. Prison should be extremely unpleasant with lots of sweat and hard labor. Course you would probably enjoy the pink undies.

I would make a marketable, and demonstratable skill a requirement in any parole bid. The requirement for a education in todays economy places a burden on all invloved in any rehab, think of this as physical rehab for the mentally/socially crippled. I believe that anyone who strives to achieve more deserves a hand up, instead of accepting the hand out. No I am not a felon, but still feel that food, shelter, and training are all that someone in state custody can expect, or desire. One more item, crimes of violence,especially domestic do not deserve special consideration, they should be happy to still be sucking air.

Hopefully to make it easier for them to stay out of prison by working for a reason. That training is probably cheaper than having them in prison again.

I say take away everything but the library. MAKE them read and learn - just useful fiction and all of the nonfiction you canhandle. MAKE them read for food or something. Book reports? Heck, I don't know. Reading is a good, cheap way to educate them. If the destroy a book on purpse, give them the death penalty. That's worse than bank robbery in my eyes.

I am in favor of fence free low to mid level camps, but put them where no one is walking out(IE. Death Valley, western Nevada, southern AZ, eastern central Nevada). Tents are a good option especially if the camp is 20mls out in the desert. No weight rooms, no gym time, no cable, except history, discovery channels. No SMOKING or any TOBACCO PRODUCTS of any sort, bare min. of food tied to work output, the harder you work the more you eat, no a/c, mandatory drug rehab as required, pink jumpsuits, and green balogna is a good start. If I ran prisons no one would want to go back. Give them a taste of "worse" and some might try not to come back.

I'd like to see parole tied to paying the Gov't back the costs of being jailed. Close supervison, a gov't mandated job, with 1/4 of the paycheck going back to pay for incarceration expenses.

Basically, turn the parolees into a work force doing manual labor, if that's all they can do, skilled jobs if they can handle it. Have them rebuild bridges, build hospitals, etc. Whatever.

There's a lot that could be done to imrpove things.

As far as the costs of keeping these guys in jail, it's still cheaper than the costs of these guys being in the street.

I don't recall anyone wanting to do away with speedy trials, atty's, etc.

There are plenty of people in prison who can both read and comprehend. Why not let them teach the ones who need help in those subjects. You could give the teachers extra priviledges if they do a good job. That way, no cost to the taxpayer.
