dovetailing a rifle barrel= less accuracy

especially in rapidfire as the barrel heats up, and especially at the muzzle. THAT'S why top riflemakers don't want to offer irons Even a setscrewed on front sight will have a discernable effect, on premium accuracy. so it's NOT all just "snobbery", but it IS mostly that.

So you have been visiting your old forum at Patriot Network! It really must hurt, to be run off the way you were.
believe that if u WANT,dumbass.

I left because JJ now owns the place, and I aint helping THAT pos do ANYTHING Just like I wouldn't piss on your guts if they were on fire, and for the same reason. You are pos, too.
Wannabe
JJ does NOT own PN.

How clear does THAT need to be?

The real JJ hates your guts with a fiery purple passion. If JJ owned PN you never would have been granted your own sandbox to play in, and THAT is a fact.

You've been treated better and more fairly on PN by the management than you have on any website to date, and by a country mile at that.
Pretty pathetic how he is wizzing on the ownership of a site that gave him his own forum and tolerated ALOT from him.

Oh well what else can you expect from him.

BS, dovetailing doesn't hurt anything nor does screwed on front sight bases as long as the bore isn't disturbed. We have several Anshutz smallbore rifles and several bolt action "over the course" National Match NRA Highpower rifles set up with screw on front sight bases and dovetails. They work perfectly fine for levels of precision that are simplly not attainable under field conditions.

Your theory that irons are left off because they have a "discernable effect" on accuracy is silly.

For the record, most Euro sniper rifles do have irons and so does the Armys M24. Though the Army shooters I know rarley take them out off thier little plastic box in the rifle case, though the screw on front base stays in place for the front sight globe and the rear base stays in place. The Army supplies Redfield Palmas for the M24 so the rifles can be shot in High Power matches. The sights supplied are not intended for field use.

The USMC has never really considered irons for the M40, if the weapon is damaged the op is scrubbed. The Unertl optic is very rugged and so rarely breaks it has never been thought a problem.

To function as a sniper you really need that optic.

Teuf,
See less See more
At the risk of going off-topic LOL

It's strikes me funny that the folks that did thier flat best to run him off PN are all over here playing patty cake with him mad because he left. :p

Teuf,
snobs making, buying such rifles r NOT

interested in JUST field accuracy. they want BRAGGING rights about benchrest groups, and as such, the diff IS discernable, just like I said. .22 results are irrelevant, they don't STRESS the bore like say, a 308 does. Furthermore, the makers don't want to RISK it, even if the problem is RARE. They have HIGH $" rep"s riding on their accuracy. Also, what bothers the accuracy of a heavy barreled target rifle and what CAN bother a slim barreled sporter rifle are two VERY different things.
Correct me if I'm wrong

I thought we were talking about back-ups irons on sniper riflers?

You will just have to believe what you want, but most folks don't want irons on thier scoped, bolt action hunting rifles and most snipers don't believe they need irons on thier sniper rifles.

It's as simple as that.

The whole issue of accuracy is not even in the equation.

Teuf,
The only real difference I could see putting a front sight on a barrel that originally didn't have one is the change in harmonics might throw off the accuracy. However, guys that shoot accurately enough to notice almost always load their own ammo, so they'd just change teh powder charge, maybe the bullet to compensate for the harmonics change.
My main .308 at the moment is a refurbished Nazi Kar98k with a new Israeli 7.62NATO barrel.

It has the original K98 iron sights on it and it's a screaming tack driver. The only real mods to it was a sporterized stock, bolt turned down, a Timney trigger, drilled and tapped for a scope, and an FN made drop in safety lever made for a scope.
About european sniper rifles. I agree the parker-hale surplus barrel on one of my rifles had been drilled and tapped for iron front sights.

Teuf- About GK he's still funny to read and goad a bit but I ain't gonna be all over him as much as on PN.

And I will admit I didn't even know about this board until someone over there mentioned he was on it.
Fair enough Todd

I'm no one to be judging what folks ought to be posting about. I get my hackles up from time to time as well :p The nature of the internet though, is that you better have thick skin and a keen sence of humor.

This seems to be a decent place to hang out, Rich Z seems to have a pretty level headed idea of administation. It will be intresting to see how it goes.

Teuf,
Back up irons are a good idea. Dovetailing the barrel won't effect accuracy. It may however effect your point of impact requiring a rezero.

I have an iron sight back up for my M40 that attaches to the rail. It uses a peep and post design. It won't get you out to 800 yards but it'll give you some aimed fire for a couple hundred yards if your glass fails.
