If you ever noticed, all the glowing testimonials to Elmer Keith were all written by him. Thousands of people have made contributions to the hunting/ shooting sports and let their achievements speak for them. Others want to make sure that nobody missed their opportunity to hear how great they were.Anybody who shoots at a deer at 600 yards with a 4" revolver probably has pointed a gun at somebody in their life. They probably were too far away to see them.

The point I see in these comments is that Elmer Keith chose to glamorize his "accomplishments" in his writings, and others have toiled in obscurity. Whether he pointed a gun at anyone may not matter to everyone, just as 38 "confirmed kills" in combat might. Is it any more pointless than someone coming on this forum and asking what is the most perfect gun for a given situation and presumably relying on the advice of total strangers. On that note, I feel that the S&W model 27 is the best gun for all situations.

I can't think of a thing that a big, heavy

underpowed revolver would be good for, actually. It's not pocketable, it's not suppressable, it lacks the power for humane taking of big game, it lacks the repeat hit speed of a good auto, as well as the ability to keep going in sand, dust, etc, or be cleaned easily in the field. It certainly lacks the range and power of a good rifle.

Sorry, I thought everybody would catch the sarcasm. It was in response to the person who wondered what the point was, as if somehow he felt that whatever doesn't sink in with him is pointless. Nobody seems to be able to get away from the idea that all a gun is for is "high noon" style shootouts. A gun can provide actual recreation for some, me included, by being an accurate tool, that doesn't have to be cleaned up after, can handle a range of ammo from wadcutters to magnums, is smaller than a rifle, infinitely more reliable than any auto, and is basically a functional work of art. If all you do is create problem scenarios in your mind, where a gun is the solution, all I can say is, "Don't spend so much time looking over your shoulder for armed felons that you wind up walking out in front of a car."

Your comparing apples to oranges here.
It's blatantly obvious you've never actually worked with a revolver.

you're full of it, sony. I've owned over

15 revolvers, to include 8 Smiths. You CLAIMING 357 has lots of power, its' suppressable, pocketable, or has the range of a rifle?

No, twits, I just point out the FACTS, and because you have your DICKS "invested" in your silly gun and ammo choices, you get all offended when those weaknesses are pointed out.

If all it is is fun, why dont you just go play tiddlywinks? that's more your speed, anyway. Why AINT it fun ENOUGH, to use realistic combat gear, and practice-compete in a realistic way, hmm? Why do you HAVE to avoid such things? You have no insight into your own psyche. YOu "play' with guns, because deep down, you WANT real fighting ability. Why not just ADMIT it, and get to work on ACQUIRING same, hmm?

The reason that you dont is you are SCARED, cheap and lazy. You have bought INTO the socialist, altruistic bs that it is somehow WRONG to want to be an effective fighter, deep down, and it eats at you. So what you do is sell out, and"plink", PRETENDING that you can make a gun serve some effective purpose, but not REALLY getting into the "dark side", of being as ruthlessly efficient as a fighter REALLY has to be, in order for LUCK to not be the determinant of the outcome of a fight.

You can plink, hunt, compete with REAL guns and loads, too, ya know. So WHY dont you, hmm?

... we thought you were a cold tough son of a bitch, randy andy, but you really are rather emotional, aren't you? You shouldn't waste all your time preparing for a fight, boy, the only thing you would need is a change of underwear. And as for solving all of life's little problems with a gun, all you need is one bullet with your name on it.

You know, I took martial arts for a while, and I did enjoy the training, exercise and focus it gave me. But realistically, unless you go out looking for trouble, how many times will someone really use that kind of training? You can spend your entire life preparing and training for your own personal war that will just never come unless you are just of the frame of mind to go out and MAKE it happen. So what is the purpose of doing that?

It sounds an awful lot like those types of people who went and stocked their basements with MREs preparing for the end of civilization when Y2K rolled around.

Murphy's Law pretty much guarantees that whatever it is that you did NOT prepare for, will be what finally gets you in the end. So why bother?

I collect guns because I like them. I like lots of different kinds of them. I like to shoot just because I find it relaxing and challenging at the same time. Some guns I have I will never shoot at all, just because I like having them and they are collectibles in their own right. I have a CCW and carry most times. I always have a gun on me when I am walking about my property on inside my buildings. But I treat them as insurance policies that I sincerely hope I never have to file a claim under.

Guns don't mean the same to all people. To feel that it is a personal weakness because someone doesn't think the same as you is, well, a personal weakness, I believe..... :)

Actualy Rich, Haykido served me rather well, no flame intended here, witnessed a punk punching his girl friend 3 times befor I could intervene (while several others much closer stood by doing nothing), I caught a knife to the upper thigh, he went to emergency surgery with a punctered lunge and diaphram.

I learned from a true Sensei, who taught disipline and honor before fighting. Those who brag and bluster are an embarresment to those of us who live by the code.:(

I can remember the day I quit Kenkoran (I think that is how it is spelled) karate. My instructor walked me up to a wall lined with 2x4s with rope wrapped around them. I was supposed to stand there and pummel those boards with my fists to toughen them up. He showed me his hands. When he made a fist, he had no knuckles as it was nearly a solid ridge of flattened callous tissue. I was playing keyboards in a local band at the time, and I knew for certain I had to choose one or the other. So I walked out of the training room and never went back.

u dont have to quit training because of

a ridiculous requirement. U just tell the coach that you'd rather not, and if he insists, you find another coach, that's all. I've been attacked a dozen times, half by dogs, and come close another dozen times. Only my obvious confidence in my abilities prevented them from trying. Mostly, those who make like pussies, and HIDE what they are, LACK that ability and confidence. :)

Do you mean like people afraid to post their name on a message board like this? :)

People who won't put their name on the words they write have no real authority or credibility, in my opinion. Anybody can say anything at all that is unverifiable. So if it is not verifiable, then it probably is not true.

You don't have to be a detective, hell, you don't even have to be as smart as andy, to know that the guy who calls you "u" is one and the same, refer to postings under "most defensive shots are under 6 ft..." Anyway now that he's been outed, I have a question for someone knowledgable on the board. Has anyone noticed that the grip frame on a pre model 27 smith is different than an N frame. Never noticed it until I put some Jay Scott grips on it which fit the N frame perfectly, service style grips, and were noticeably large on the front of the pre 27 grip. I heard that the prefix S at that time indicated an S frame. Any thoughts on this?
