Hey Ghost, the pre 27's are what folks refer to as Registerd 357's.
They were sold with a certificate of registry because they had to pass a higher criteria for proof testing, steels and heat treating of that day weren't what they are today.As I understand they lost a lot of frames in proff testing.
As for the S prefix, I'll not guess.

Thanks cowboy, The reason for my question was Blue Book and Gun Traders Guide show registered pre war up til 38, non registered pre war up to 41 and then a blank area with modern revolvers from 58. they started calling them N frames shortly before that and mine, according to S&W is a pre 27 made in 56. 3 1/2" barrel with target sights and service grips serial numbered to the gun. To my eyes the prettiest handgun ever made.
